What are some of the current video medai players that use 3.5" hard drives? What are the advantages of each? In the past, I think I saw a DVD player (DVD disc) that had a removable hard drive in a standard DVD player form factor.

The few models that I've seen reviewed support many different video formats, even HD. But the video quality wasn't very good. For quality, I would look into a standard DVD player, Divx certified, that also has USB support. Then you can simply attach a USB HDD.

These are the better ones out there, you can find them at a lower price if you look around:

I've seen the MediaGate reviewed, don't know about the others. It didn't have very good video quality (SD or HD) and displayed a lot of artifacting.
