I have recently turned into a video crash dummy. I am having problems with media player crashing everytime I try to play any video file. I sent an error report and was notified by microsoft that ffdshow was the culprit. I didn't have any problems until I tried to convert DIVX files to burn onto a DVD. I tried to use Nero and it said I needed a codec. I downloaded the Nero codec pack. I think that is about the time this problem developed. I uninstalled ffdshow with no fix. I uninstalled the nero with no fix. I installed the vista codec pack with no fix. I am a novice with a little knowledge of computers. What I mean is I can't do any programing type stuff without a complete tutorial, lol. I ran Codec Sniper and can post that here if it will help. I think I may be overloaded with codecs but I don't know enough to tell if that is true. I need some assistance from the pros here to correct this problem. Please tell me if more info is needed. Thanks for your help.

Let this be a lesson to you : Codec Packs Kill.
Try Filmerit instead of CodecSniper. It is more complex, but does a better job.Read my blog here.

Will someone please reply. I will post my logfile from filmerit if you can look at it please. My media Player crashes on every Video. I uninstalled Vista Codec pack and any other packs that I could find.. I don't know if I got them all. Please let me know what I might do to stop the crash and play videos again.

What OS are you running? You mention the Vista codec pack, so I assume Vista. The Vista codec pack, depending on which one, usually includes ffdshow.
And when you say 'media player', do you mean Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic? I assume WMP as you mention MS. WMP is not too great at playing anything, IMO. MPC should have worked, though.
I have no clue about Filmerit, never used it.
Let's start over and find out what you need. And not worry about what you have or don't have for the moment. Take one of your Divx files and drop it into Gspot 2.70 and post that here as a screen shot. Like this: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic271697.html Blank out the video name.
Gspot will tell you if you are missing the codec needed to play the video and which one you need. That's a much safer way than just installing codecs at random.Just because Nero doesn't open it and WMP doesn't play it may not mean much. If it is Divx, just install the Divx codec.
And if you are using Vista, right click on the program installers and select 'Run as administrator' when you install them and you will have much less problems with installing or using them.
If you used this Vista codec pack with Vista, it's safe, as long as you follow the instructions.http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=66826
Installing any codec that might replace ones you already have is where you can create real problems.
And if you are converting Divx or Xvids off the net to DVD, you might try ConvertXToDVD instead and it will make the whole process much easier. -
i am actually running Windows Xp and Windows Media Player 11. I installed the Vista Codec because someone suggested that would fix my problem. I will search for a DIVX movie to do as you suggest but I think I deleted them all because I suspected one may be the cause of my problem.
-
XP. Well that simplifies it a little.
But I wouldn't listen anymore to the person that said it was a good idea to install the Vista codec pack.
But it probably didn't hurt anything.
I would try MPC. Fixing WMP 11 could end up being more work than it's worth. Even MS seems to have a hard time doing that.JMO, though.
But I would still start with Gspot and work from there. Removing codecs can get complex and I wouldn't do it yet unless you really need to. It's always best to identify the problem before you start applying solutions.
EDIT: Thanks for the Gspot screen shot.
It says you have the proper codec, but that's a really old Divx codec, dates back to 2003.I would uninstall it, and use a newer one. I believe the latest is DivX 6.6.1 or so.
The audio on that file is also CBR, which is good. MP3 VBR can sometimes cause problems, especially with MPEG encoders. The audio quality is a bit low at 64kb/s, 128kb/s is more typical, but they probably lowered it to get more room for the video. In Gspot, if the green 'VBR' window is on, you could have problems encoding a file.
It also says the length is correct, which usually means there are no major sync problems with the audio.
The 29.97fps video is NTSC, which is also good. PAL video (25fps) can also cause problems at times.
You can also use the part down at the bottom of Gspot to see exactly how your computer will go about playing that video. What audio and video programs it will use. The three blue numbers will show how it is to be played.
But, there doesn't seem to be a problem with that particular video and it should encode to MPEG without any major problems, unless there is something I missed. -
Ok I will dowload it in 2 days and try it. I have to leave now, am working until Sat. Morning (36 hours) so I won't be able to work on this for a couple of days. Please feel free to post any fixes or suggestions in that time. I get my mail on my PPC and will apply suggestions as soon as I can on Saturday. Thanks so very much for your help.

Post back in this thread when you get back and we may be able to solve the rest of the issues. And you know there is one question I forgot to ask? What format do you want to encode it to? I assumed MPEG for a DVD.
Both Nero and WMP can be problematic at times. There are better ways to do all this. -
Uninstall two items .
A: ffdshow
B: Divx 6 codec
Reboot , and try again .
----
Warning , backup each section heading in filmerit , and read the instructions carefully ... I've seen it go mental on occasions and break more than it was trying to repair .
Having those backups helps to restore items back to original values . -
I'm glad someone read through that Filmerit log. It was more than I wanted to tackle at the time.
I get the impression that at one point he had about 3 ffdshows running. And probably a few Divx codecs.
-
Yes , I just did a new xp with sp2 install two weeks ago , and before they could get their mitt's on it , I used filmerit to backup all the default info ... just incase .
Mind you ... I wouldn't do it without a lot of coffee on hand ... and I think , regdrop was the dereg / rereg tool ... quicker than typing what is needed .
I keep those logs on a flash drive around my neck ... cant find my patriot unit ... its done a walk about here .
Staring at some 300+ entries related to codecs and directshow , is not something one would do ... often .
----
I had 2 x ffdshows running at one stage , older version , and got rid of it ... The old vdub was frameserving a 1.2 hour avi to bbmpeg ... at 2 fps ... come back a week later sport ... and every now and then , bbmpeg appeared to rollback a number of frames and move forward again , like a yoyo .
The latest version of ffdshow stays put without interfering , unless I let it . -
Uninstall two items .

Ok so how can I get rid of ffdshow. I uninstalled the vistacodec which had ffdshow included, but I can't find the uninstall to get id of the ffdshow that seems to still be lurking on my system. I don't know enough about the registry to go there and delete it. I will search to remove the DIVX 6 codec but if you have any easy way to do that please let me know. Thanks. -

I almost lost count of the number of screen's that all took ...
----
Ffdshow.ax ... located > C:\WINDOWS\system32
http://lyberty.com/mediatech/nero/mp4/nero_mp4.html
(shows how to register an .AX , and below , how to use /U to unregister it)
You type in the run command box : regsvr32 /u Ffdshow.ax
If the codec is in another folder other than system32 , you must specify the location .
But only do it while those codec tool's are not currently running .
The file remains in C:\WINDOWS\system32 , and can be removed if desired ... but leave it their for now ... make sure other issues are resolved FIRST , by testing video clip playback in several programs ... not just ONE ... and several different sources .
Rebooting just makes things clear out ... windows gets some funny ideas at times , without user input .
----
In filmerit , close each group so only the main section headings are listed with the + , click one at a time (section header name only to highlight) , and hit ACTION > save merits ... Name the self generated zip after each section header .
It dosent support doing the whole lot in one go .
Keep these for later troubleshooting of section area's .
----
To delete , using these types of tool's , you need to understand how to return them , later , if required ... you have to watch out for that idiot system restore ... if you ever need to use it , all hell could break out ... reset a new system restore point prior to removal process ... and include info as to what took place to remind yourself later , why it was created in the first place .
----
Ps : You have a short list , mines 471 listed . -
Got an error message saying unregister dll failed. Return code 0x80070002.
-
You should have seen mine ... backup that is , about 20 main groupings , each saved using section header names .
Its there all right , you didnt proceed with the removal using codec sniper or filmerit , prior ?
If so , then it may already nolonger appear to the system as a viable codec choice , even though the file remains .
Could also be picky about the name ... I had the capital F in that info ... windows can be lame sometimes .
Did you give it a crack via the re-registering of ffdshow.ax ... if that comes back with success , then the unregistering part should work as per normal ... which should give the all clear for system to be rebooted . -
So do i need to delete all those ffdshow that showed up in the search? I am not sure how to do it with codec sniper or filmerit. I don't want to delete the wrong thing.
-
But, there doesn't seem to be a problem with that particular video and it should encode to MPEG without any major problems, unless there is something I missed.
The Video will not play at all. -
I think it's time to format the HDD and re-install Windows XP fresh.
Sometimes a computer gets so screwed up that the above is the only real solution to get it "clean" again.
In the future never ever install any "codec packs".

I'll avoid all pay for video and audio service's on the grounds its all junk and inferior in quality ... and avoid drm crapware .
Also , would be nice to know what the files extension is ... could be talking mov , rm , rmvb , mkv , mp4 , oog , not to forget ratdvd thing .
Try gspot and / or mediainfo to determine if suitable decoders are installed ... if not , you can not re-encode it unless the program chosen to perform the conversion has some method of decoding the source built in , such as vlc dose ... which would be you next thing to do .
Download vlc and see if it can handle the playback of the file .
----
Thats correct , no need to remove them , if they are already disabled ... but you didn't say how my request for you to try the re-registering of ffdshow.ax went ?
If that also produces an error , you have bigger issues with os / registry .
----
But as FulciLives puts it , a clean reinstall is probably due . -
The video did play. Have watched it several times. Has been on my system for 2 years. I have just been trying to figure out what I did to screw everything up. I am manually tring to remove the ffdshow. I rolled back to WMP10 with no help. Have removed all divx codecs on my PC. Figure it is time to try a stiffer approach. If all else fails I will just do a recovery on my PC and be a lot more careful with what I install and download. I just don't want to do a recovery as I have a lot of data to backup.
-
Ok problem partially fixed. I did search funtion on my PC an deleted any reference to ffdshow. I deleted all divx references. I used filmerit and deleted any divx. I reinstalled ffdshow from this site. My avi files are plying fine now. All of my mpg files are freezing tough. The audio plays but the video freezes after a second or two. The WMP no longer crashes and produces error message. I feel like the battle is half over but I need to get my mpg files plaiyng. Any ideas?
-
Do your MPEG files freeze on VLC also? If not, maybe a MPEG codec problem. The MPEG-2 codec is not included with Windows, (Except in some versions of Vista) so it had to be installed. I believe it comes with ffdshow, so you might check one of your MPEGs with Gspot and see what is doing the 'rendering' by using the 'Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests'.
