They should all run in Vista. I use TMPGEnc plus encoder and TDA and they work fine with Vista. Did you install them using 'Run as administrator'? Sometimes you may need to raise the VFAPI priority with TMPGEnc encoder, I don't know about Xpress. This may apply, not sure: http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/convert/tmpgenc/tmpgenc.htm Scroll down the page to 'Problem opening source files'.

Which is better Tmpgenc plus or Tmpgenc xpress or is it a matter of preferences?

I think Xpress has the edge over regular Tmpgenc, just because it can convert to more formats, and I like the newer interface. Still, they're both really good, very reliable, but not terribly fast Mpeg2 encoders. Cinemacraft is faster, but I don't like the visual presentation of the program. I'm not smart enough, probably. HC is the one I use most, however. There's something I really like about free software.

Overall Cinemacraft is probably the better but thats mine opinion. I also like Tmpgenc plus....I guess its a toss up.

I tried tmpgenc xpress 4.0 and it did the file up until 99 percent then it had an error. What does this mean?

It got to 99% and did what ? It stopped ? It gave an error message ? It did a little dance ?

Have you looked in the error logs to see what messages might be there about the time it stopped ?

You need to give more details. Do you ring your mechanic and say "I was driving home and I got 10 feet from my house and my car stopped. What does this mean ?" and expect a realistic answer ?
