  1. I am trying to convert a VOB with ac3 to xvid and mp3. I tried 3 different virtualdubs, dvdx, dgmpgdec149, and tmpgenc. I think it may have something to do with the ac3 file. It has a longer time than the movie by about a second. I cant get it in sync using virtualdubs audio interleave option also. Is there a program that can fix it?

Try to find the delay value (either use the one written by DGIndex to audio file name at saving project, or find it manually e. g. in Womble). To change the delay by inserting silence in the beginning or cutting use DelayCut (command line utility):

  5. DGIndex reports no delay. The movie length and audio differ by about one second. I don't know why. I'm going to try avi.net to see if it can convert it right.

  6. avi.net seemed to be pretty decent in keeping synced audio and video. I can't tell if its out of sync, so that means its ok. I'll be using that to convert VOB files which give me problem, but I still prefer to use VirtualDub since its a bit more flexible.

I do quite a bit of converting dvdvrs to xvid avi`s via VirtualDub (to play back TV episodes in work using VLan haha) , the only step I use extra is using TMPGenc DVD Author to rip the VOB to an MPG on my hard drive and then use VDub on the mpg (VDub MPG2 with AC3 filter) - using this method , all my avi`s have stayed in sync (I did try converting from the VOBs after copying my own made DVDVRs to my hard drive but they were out of sync) . This isn`t TMPGDA`s real purpose but rather than make life hard for myself , I just use something that does it , Im sure there must be another program that has this as its sole purpose ?

In the past, I've had sync issues with some titles when going from DVD to divx/xvid using, freeware Super (ffmpeg, mencoder gui), dr divx, dvdx and payware winavi.

The only method which so far is foolproof and works every time is if I do a movie only extract of the dvd. I have been using dvdshrink to reauthor the dvd shedding all extras and menus and selecting only the movie. This step is not too time consuming if the output is already under 4.4 gig there is no transcoding so it might take from 4 to 10 minutes at most especially if the source dvd is already on hdd. If transcoding is needed it may take up to 30 minutes.

This may not be needed on every film but it's hard to tell ahead of time so now I do it as a matter of course. I used to check a short clip and figured if it was ok then I could proceed but that wasn't always the case. Sometimes the drift or shift wasn't constant.

It is time well spent when the results are 100% success. Every divx movie conversion I've done using any of the previously mentioned tools when accessing the newly authored dvd have been in sync (I prefer Dr Divx because I keep the subs in the divx output). This is a lot better than finding out later that a movie may appear in sync at the beginning of the film but then starts to drift by 1/4 second every 10 minutes or so of a movie until it's way out. It's more work to redo the whole thing or try to fix the avi than to get it right the first time.

  10. Only problem with avi.net is that the file wouldn't play on my dvp642 player. I may just do what Sartori does next time.
