I'm going on hour number 5 trying to figure out this problem.. Usually I never ask, I always figure it out.. Well this time i am completely stumped..

Sony Vegas 7.0e I get the problem Audio: Stream attributes could not be determined. MPEG Layer-3.. The video streams fine.. I am editing XviD .avi files with the DivX codec.. I have tried ffdshow, xvid codec, divx codec, LAME, and acm codec..

I HAVE gotten this to work before with DivX codec, LAME and ffdshow together.. I used it for a few months without any problems, audio and video worked great with no sync problems.. i stumbled across a .wmv file which i wanted to edit and i was told i need to install acm codec.. i installed that and well that screwed everything up because now i am back to video without audio.. Audio: Stream attributes could not be determined. MPEG Layer-3

now i'm thinking i need some type of ac3/mp3/mpeg plug-ins? the plug-in manager was no help.. any other way? or am i looking in the wrong direction?

i'm trying to think of what other information I can give you to help, but i'm not sure what else to type.. If you need any additional info, please reply and let me know! I'm hoping someone has experienced this problem before and knows right off the bat.. Hey its worth a shot.. Thanks in advance!

You could convert the audio to WAV and import it back into your project. AVI2WAV will do the job.

Also, you can give the LAME mp3 ACM decoder a shot:

thanks for your reply Soopafresh! Unfortiantly the LAME mp3 ACM decoder didnt work.. ive got 1000s of avi files and converting the audio to wav would take way to long.. i appriciate the advice though, if all else fails i will have to do that...

does anyone else have any suggestions?

like it or not soopa is probably correct. you have most likely downloaded an xvid with vbr mp3 which won't work in most encoders properly.

Try this script out - it'll process an entire folder of AVI files, creating new ones with WAV audio in the Converted folder.

Vegas isn't designed to work with Divx/Xvid type avi files. Divx/Xvid is an end user product. It is over compressed, poor for editing because of the very long GOPs, and is really designed for playback only. What you are trying to do is put a screw in with a hammer, and complaining that the hammer doesn't work properly. You are using the wrong tool for the job.

nope aedipuss, didn't download anything.. i ripped miniDV to XviD.. thinking that was the best quality and size video to work with.. i'm very wrong huh? lol.. i ripped it with WinDV and deinterlaced and converted with VDub.. i choose VBR in VDub, but gspot says CBR?

Soopafresh, thanks! after all this will save me time..

so guns1inger what format do you work with to edit videos? suggestions? you say DivX/XviD is a end product, so do you edit with say .wmv or .mov then render into XviD avi with the finished product?

thanks guys, not only have you solved my problem, your teaching me things! =)

Keep the video DV until it looks the way you want. Then reencode to your end format. wmv and mov are as much end formats as DivX/XviD.

I work in DV or something lossless like Lagarith or huffyuv for editing and/or processing. Mpeg/Divx/Xvid are the very last stop.

The only time I work with something heavily compressed is when I am working with mpeg2 streams taken from digital broadcasts or my DVD Recorder, and for those I use Womble, which is designed to edit mpeg specifically.

No, not even that. Just load the transfered DV in Vegas and do your thing.

geez this whole time i figured it was best to convert to XviD because of the smaller size, then edit.. boy was i wrong! straight from DV works fine! thank you so much for clearing this up.. now i just need to re-rip my miniDV's to my comp with WinDV...

and i need to buy another harddrive for storage ... 12GB a tape is crazy!

thanks everyone.. I believe that is all i need for now.. i really appreciate it, you have no idea!
