  1. I'm attempting to convert an XVid file to MPG to burn to DVD. However, there is a glitch or something at some point about fifteen minutes in, which either mutes or desyncs the audio depending on the conversion/extraction method. There's nothing noticeably wrong with the original XVid.

How can I work around this, to get a decent DVD out of it?

  2. As must be posted here thousands of times, the solution for most annoying audio problems is to extract the audio as a raw WAV file. If this contains serious errors, fix them manually in a WAV editor. Then encode using the WAV.

  3. I've tried using VirtualDub to extract the sound as a WAV file, and it outright refuses to do it. I've tried other methods of extracting it, which end in unsynced audio after that point about 20 minutes in, or no audio at all at about that point.

If I'm just working with a wav file, how can I resync the audio?

Try Goldwave to extract the audio. Just load the AVI, save wav.
But my experience tells me there's something wrong with the AVI at the point where the audio goes out of sync. Can be very taxing to fix.

  5. I extracted with Goldwave, and Muxman is rejecting the audio file.

  6. Anyone know why the file's been rejected?

Does muxman give you an error ?
Is the file DVD compliant ?

  8. It's the wav file I saved from the AVI using Goldwave.

Muxman simply says "0 files accepted, 1 file rejected."

It has no problem with the video.

Encode the wav to AC3 using ffmpeggui before passing it on to MuxMan (I'm guessing you're feeding the wav to MuxMan?)

  10. The ffmpeggui download is "in an unknown format or damaged."

  11. Is there anywhere else I could download it, or a different program to achieve the same thing?

Have you tried to scan the avi for bad frames with virtualdub?

  14. Muxman's rejecting an AftenGUI-created ac3, a virtualdub scan was clean.

Post a g-spot or mediainfo of the wav file and the AC3 file. Aften generally makes very good AC3 files, and ffmpeggui is also pretty good, so something else is going on here, either with the source files, muxman, or the process you are using. You could also try running the AC3 file through AC3fix, although I suspect it will come up clean.

  16. Well, I found a possible cause of the problem. The AC3 has a total size of 0 KB. Evidently, I've screwed something up in AftenGUI. I'd use ffmpeggui, but the .rar file is corrupted. Though that may just be my completely useless internet connection.

Would amount to about 1/2 hour worth. Sounds correct? Have you listened to the wav, and is it what you'd expect?

Try using the encwav2ac3 gui for aften.

For a std wav (44.1 KHz stereo) you should be looking at a file ~ 950 MB for 1.5 hours... Something's very wrong. I admire you for your stamina, but unless this XviD is extremely rare and precious, I'd just drag it to the trash can (while holding Shift) and get on with my life...

  21. The trash is not an option.

    What are the possible problems?

If it really comes down to it, I can afford to cut a couple of seconds from the problem area of the video, or even just have a couple seconds silence. However, I'm not getting rid of this footage. If all possibilities, no matter how remote, are exhausted to no avail, I guess I'll have to make do with a data disc. However, I'm not going to take that step without exhausting all other options.

Post a g-spot of the Xvid file.

Open the file in either virtualdubmod or AVI Demux, find the point where the audio glitches, and try cutting from a few frames before to a few frames after, then writing a new copy of the file in Direct Stream Copy mode. Test and see if the problem has been excised.

Move the time to the start of the edit (drag the slider) then mark an in point. Move the end of the edit, mark the out point. Hit DEL.

If you are in Direct Stream Copy mode then you will only be able to edit on i-frames, which are about every 300 frames in Xvid/Divx files. If you use the very latest alpha version of virtualdub you can use smart rendering to cut where you want and only re-encode the open GOPs.
