Is there anyway you could rig one up yourself with a firewire enclosure? Could you have a minidv cam set up to capture to a firewire harddrive enclosure? Is that feasible? Could you set up a minios on it to operate a capture program on the fly???

That's pretty much what the FireStore is - a FAT32 drive with an embedded OS. (That's right - FAT32. To me, that's a show stopper. People have asked for NTFS but to now avail. The reason give is that FAT32 is supported by Windows, Mac OS and Linux.)
The OS would need to have FireWire drivers, AV/C support etc, and a user interface.
But an inexpensive alternative to the currently available products would certainly be nice! -
I believe you would need more than just a hard drive and controller. But with the proliferation of programmable microcomputers available, it seems someone who understands the transfer process could come up with something.
I did get a email reply back from Sony that said they were not aware of any development of a hard drive consumer camera with DV storage. But they also said they aren't privy to R&D info. At least it was a honest answer and not just a form letter. Hitachi and JVC just said they would get back to me. For the others, I'm still looking for addresses.
A few thousand emails more and they may express more interest. -
