i'm very new at this so bear with me. i downloaded a few mpg off of kazaa that were supposedly vcd's. well i tried playing them on my home dvd player and had no luck. a menu came up to select tracks but they wouldn't play, i could select a track but not play. anyhow it says both at this site and in my dvd player manual that it plays vcd's. so, will it only play files with the mpeg extension and not the mpg? because it wouldn't play the 2 files that were mpg. i'm not sure that it matters or not-whether it is mpg or mpeg?? if this is not the problem then why the hell won't it play the files i downloaded?

oh and btw it also says in my manual that it cupports cd-r (as it plays mp3's just fine). if it matters i have the rca rc5240p dvd/cd player if you want to reference what it says about it on this sight. thanks

would switching to cd-rw perhaps solve the problem becasue i read some posts (on similiar subjects) that said this might work. also, what about switching burning software (i use hp cd-writer software). would nero maybe solve the problem?

It sounds like you just burned the mpg file onto a data CDR in mode1. If so this won't work. x(S)VCDs need additional files and need to be in a certain format. If you already have the MPEG file (mpg or MPEG doesn't matter) you're 99% there.
You can use the VCD template in Nero, or click to the left under 'Author' and try either VCDEasy or TSCV. These programs are GUIs for VCDImager, and GUIs for CDRDAO a freeware burning program.
Of the two VCDEasy is much easier to use (http://www.doom9.org) TSCV has more features but might be a bit much if all you want to do is burn a VCD (http://www.ttool.org) -
oh lord i don't understand this vcdeasy very well, i installed it but it says that the burning utility, cdrdao is disbled because my burner may not work with it even thoug it is on the compatibility list. anyhow, it is all greyed out when i try to enable it even though it said i could enable it somehow. anyhow, all i got when i selected my file was a .bin file outputted. what steps do i take to turn my mpg to vcd that can be read bymy dvd player??
-
anyhow, i don't think i have to have the burning program (maybe i do), just how do i turn the bin file into a file that can be read by my dvd player?
-
are there any other freeware programs that will do the trick for me? i don't think cdrdao is compatible with my burner because i am not able to enable it in vcdeasy. does this cdrdao program automatically convert the bin to a mpg that can be read by my dvd player? also the other gui tcsv.. or whatever link don't on the dl page, only xp version

ok i got cdrdao to recognize my cd burner, only thing i have to figure out now is figure out exactly what i am doing, lol. i select a file and all i get is a image that is a bin, cue, and xml file on my hard drive, do i have to convert this somehow and how do i get it to burn using my cd-writer? i have burn checked off but it doesn't burn anyhing onto my cd-r. help!!!
-
well i tried everything, seemed to have it working, but for some reason when cdrdao tries to burn to a cd i get the error message: cdrdao write failed: cannot determine the status of the inserted medium. i give up for tonight, will try with a blank cd-rw tommorow as i was trying to burn onto a blank cd-r. that is thr only thing i can think of possibly doing now. btw, i know it writes a bin file or a img file to your harddrive depending on whether you select to create a bin or cdrdao toc (whatever that is), well which do i need to create and will it automatically make it into a mpg/vcd that is readable by my dvd player???, if i somehow get the burn process to work (hopefully like i said by using a cd-rw tommorow).
