I am new to video editing and have a simple question. If I want to record a sporting event in HD with my hdvr and HDTV. Can I later use the ADVC110 to transfer the program to my computer. (macbook pro)

Is that possible, how much quality loss would I be looking at? I am still not sure what all the differences are between the 110 and a minidv camcorder. I am looking to buy one or the other real soon.

Any information would be great. Thanks

    A mini-DV camcorder is a camera.

The ADVC110 is an analogue-to-DV conversion device.

Some DV cameras will do the same job as an ADVC110 by allowing analogue input and DV pass-through, but most do not.

Using either method (assume the camera supports analogue-to-DV will work, however if this is a regular thing then the ADVC110 is certainly more convenient.

Quality will be reduced to around SD level.

    Thanks for the reply.

Is there a way to keep it close to HD level? What about just hooking a firewire cable to the hdvr to my computer? Would that be better?

What HDVR do you have? If it has a IEEE-1394 output that works for HD you may not need the ADVC. The ADVC-110 takes SD analog composite or S-Video in and outputs DV format over IEEE-1394. DV format is 720x480 or about DVD quality.

The IEEE-1394 from normal cable DVR boxes may be HD MPeg2_TS depending on model and local cable company policy.

Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300hd, with Comcast.

Ill try it when I get a firewire cable and see what happens. Not a huge deal. My main purpose is going to be using a camcorder or advc110 to transfer home vhs tapes to my computer for editing.

Extracting the MPeg2 transport stream will require some tech wizardry. See here

In some areas, Comcast only passes local channels.

Otherwise connect S-Video and audio to the ADVC.
