joining 2 avi movies

hi, how do i join 2 avi movies into 1 big movie and what settings would i need to set in Virtualdub Mod?

I got a message saying can not append segment. The sizes are different (608 x 352 vs 688 x 400)

That's right, you can't. One will have to be reencoded to the same resolution as the other if you really must join them. And other parameters will have to be the same as well (codec, for example, and audio type and bitrate), or they won't join. Maybe if you'd explain why you think you have to join them, a workaround can be suggested.

How can we work around it? The reason why so when it comes to the final part i would have one big movie to work with.

If you are going to leave them as 1 big movie that is one thing, if you are going to convert to something else, MPG for example, use an encoder that will take both files as is and encode them as 1 file.

Example TDA 3 will encode from avi to DVD and let you add more than one file. Or TMPGEnc Xpress will take files and encode them. Output is selectable for all to 1 file or each file encode to separate files.

I am confused. All i wanted is to join AVI's together.

You have to re-encode one file so it matches the other. Then join together.

Yes, you could re-size/re-encode both parts to 720x480 and then join together. Is it worth it? I'd say no, you'll be losing quality on both parts.

What would be the best way? Encode them at the same size they were downloaded? Which one should i encode at 608 x 352 or 688 x 400? I thought 720 x 480 is the good quality?

Sorry, my brain isn't working 720x480 wouldn't suit as it would be the wrong aspect ratio. Your two files are very close to having the same aspect ratio so re-encode either of the files to the same resolution as the other one.

How do i tell if my movie is NTSC or PAL and low resloution or not?

Drop a file into Gspot and look at the framerate. Low or high resolution has nothing to with this.

That implied you were then going to do something else to them beyond watching them.

If you're just going to watch them? Then leave them alone and don't join them. Anything you do will reduce quality.

Huh. I can't recall ever not seeing an "NTSC" or "PAL" indication, but I guess it would be possible.
