    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a dvd player I can purchase that has a region-free hack, and is relatively cheap, but reliable?

I purchased the Phillips DVP5140 in Dec - on $50, but iit's already broke.

    thanks!

Thanks, but I'd like to do the region-free hack myself, and not pay the mark-up they charge

A dvd-player that I can purchase locally would be ideal - again, not looking for super-duper, just good and reliable with a good price tag.

There's never any guarantee a region free hack is available - even if it's the same make and model as you find a hack for. The manufacturer may have changed the firmware or chipset or anything while keeping the "label". If you want to be sure to get a region free player, buy a region free player.
I've found the cheaper the player, the more region free players you'll find. Expensive brand players are rarely region free.

And to add, sure, they charge a 'mark up'. But they also usually provide a warranty. If you hack the unit yourself and it quits or you mess up the hack, your manufacturer won't honor the factory warranty because you modified the unit.

Unless they've been "chipped" -- preferably by an outfit that's been doing this for many years. I'm aware of this one

which has long had many models from Pioneer, JVC, Toshiba and other major brands, but I'm sure there are many other such dealers. Several of the ones they carry are rather pricey. And as has been noted, whatever warranty there is will then be from the dealer, as the mfr. is going to disown you.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

  6. Oppo DVD players are highly regarded and can easily be made region free by pressing a few buttons on their remote controls. They are universal players (support Divx, SACD, DVD-Audio, etc.) with very good PAL to NTSC conversion and SD DVD upscaling capabilities.
