    Hi there,

I used a video camera with a hard disk which records footage into MPEG-2 format. I'm using Pinnacle Studio 9 Software to edit but it will not edit files in the above format. (It allows me to add footage to the timeline but it will not play in the preview window.)

I have tried using an MPEG to AVI converter which results in loss of audio and although I can rip the audio and sync them together it is a very boring and time consuming process.

Does anyone know of perhaps a codec or a really reliable converter which would help me overcome my problem?

    Thanks in anticipation

    Neale

I would consider switch to another editor that handles mpeg2 much better like Mpeg VIdeo Wizard.

    I've used v 9.35, and it does handle mpeg2.
BUT, if your clip has AC3 audio, you must pay Pinnacle to activate the plugin for Dolby / AC3. Otherwise the clip won't play.

If the audio is wav/PCM, then I'm not sure what your problem is.

Although Studio 9 always worked ok for me, I only worked with DV-avi. Everyone kept advising me that editing in mpeg would lead to quality loss.

  5. Check the Hauppauge site. I believe theres a free mpeg editor you can download. It should handle mpegs2 like a champ considering their cards encode to that.

If you're not married to a Pinnacle only solution, both MPEGVCR and VideoReDo can edit MPEG-2 video with AC-3 audio or MPEG I layer II audio (NOT MP3 audio, but you shouldn't have that anyway). Both allow you to "try before you buy". By the way, MPEG Video Wizard is by the same people are MPEGVCR, it's just a more advanced product with more options.
