i'm after some info about about bitrates when converting avi's to mpeg's

i've burnt vcd, xvcd and svcd mainly from an original mpeg file, but i'm not sure how to work out the best bitrate setting when converting from an avi.

i know the higher the bitrate and resolution the better the results are on my dvd player. however, crap in = crap out with avi to mpeg conversion.

how can i find out the original bitrate of the avi file to get the best results when converting to mpeg?

    thanks in advance.
