There should be an option in VLC's menus to get more information about a movie file. Use that to see which audio codec was used for the AVI, and post the information here. (Don't include file and path names, if you prefer.)

You'll generally need the corresponding Quicktime component installed for Toast to be able to handle the audio in the video, unless there's something else causing a problem (which is why I suggested you post the video information here).

  3. if you can't watch it in QT, Toast won't be able to convert it...that being said, do NOT use toast to convert video to different formats.....use mpeg2works or ffmpeg

No. The video already plays fine in QT so you do not need a new video codec to play it. Just install the AC3 codec and I am almost 100% positive that you will get audio.

The first time around I recommended Perian because it comes with an AC3 codec.

edit: and if you click on "AC3 codec" on my previous post it is already a link to the download so you did not have to look for it.

OK. Just to make sure you will be able to play almost any file with QuickTime install DivX, 3ivx and Flip4Mac. Once you do so re-start the computer and now all those .avi files should play without any issues.

  12. It would be informative if you opened the file in VLC, hit command-I and tell us what information you get in the Advanced Information tab for Stream 1.

  16. Well, that just looks like a common or garden MP3 audio track, unless it's MP2, which I don't believe QuickTime supports in an AVI file though I'm sure someone far more knowledgeable than me will put you straight.
