I've got some video which I captured from my Panasonic DV camcorder using Sony Vegas (therefore .avi) I want to encode the video to Mpeg II and make DVDs out of the footage. My question is, what bitrate should I encode the files at? I want to utlize the best quality footage possible, while making sure most (if not all) DVD players can play the dvds without freezing up. I am going to encode the files with TMPGEnc, settings include DVD NTSC 16:9 (the footage was shot in widescreen and I want to retain that) CBR MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2) and when going through the wizard the "recommended settings" are 8000 kbits/sec and audio at 384. Is this a good setting? Is it too high? I am mainly concerned about freezing on DVD players during playback.

Secondary question, is there much of a difference using CBR and VBR settings? Which one is preferable? Thanks!

    your settings sound 'safe'
you'll want your audio in dolby.
do your audio separately, use an aften gui like encwavtoac3
    tmpg plus is old...

Thanks for your input. I know TMPG plus is old, but it is a program I have used in the past and am comfortable with. Is there a program you would recommend above TMPGEnc with similar ease of use? Thanks.

I'm still using TMPGEnc Plus and use the "recommended" settings or lower video bit rate if I want to put more content on a particular disc. I've had no playback issues on my 8-year-old Panasonic and other, cheap, portables. I typically use AviSynth to input to TMPGEnc, though, mainly to resize to deal with the horrible overscan on the tube TV.

    Cheers,
    Jim
