    Hello there,
I am having some troubles burning a .dmg (Mac image file) onto a disk, using Windows (XP and Vista).

I searched and searched, and found that Transmac would do the trick, without any conversion or anything necessary. Just select the .dmg file, and it will burn the Mac-compatible image. But when I tried to burn it, Transmac (version 7.5) gives me the error: "The Volume Image File could not be opened!" This is AFTER I select the .dmg file and load it into the "image file to write" box, which works fine. The error appears only after I click "OK" to burn.

Any ideas? Is there any other software that I can use that will directly let me burn a .dmg image file? (not convert, just burn the image)

    Thanks!

Even if you can't burn it directly on a PC, you should be able to extract the file with a tool like ISOBuster, MagicISO or UltraISO. Then burn it with another tool. Or you can see if ImgBurn could burn it directly. I don't think Nero will help you much anyway as it's fairly limited on dealing with image files.

ImgBurn apparently does not support .dmg files (someone please correct me if i'm wrong). And I need to burn the image directly, for use on a Mac (ie, not convert the files).

You may not find any PC program that will burn them in that format. But extracting them doesn't convert them, just takes them out of the .dmg container, then you may be able to burn them. If you wanted them in the container, burn them as a data disc. One of those programs I mentioned should be able to extract them. You could aways put them back into a ISO container, but that doesn't seem to serve any purpose if you just want to burn them.

EDIT: Of course if your Mac uses a different file format, none of that may work. Are they program or system files? Most audio and video files should work in either platform.

Why do you need to convert? You can burn the .dmg to a data CD/DVD, or copy it to a USB flash drive (or any external USB/Firewire hard drive), then take what you used to the Mac. You should be able to then copy the file over to the Mac, and mount it as you normally would.

I did see one command-line utility for Windows, a long time ago, to convert DMG files to ISO files... but it didn't last long, and had only basic support for DMGs, as I recall. There are a handful of utilities to do it on the Mac side, however.

  6. .dmg is a compressed image file. like the previous poster said, just put the .dmg on a usb drive or a cd-r (or dvd-r not sure how big it is) and just load up the device on the mac and click on the file and mount the file all will work well. (on a side note mac OS X can read all windows file formats so you really don't need to worry about file formats)
