    Good looking site, good tips

You know I am thinking what steps does this forum takes to prevent from what happened to PC Flank and other computer forums. I wouldn't want to see this forum to bee taking over by spammers and hackers

One of the best forms of protection is to not discuss the protection measures you've taken. That way the would be hackers don't know what to look for.

Ah, the "security through obscurity" theory. So the only input you'll get is when one day you discover you've been hacked.

No, not the "security through obscurity" theory. That would mean not taking protective measures and hoping nobody notices. I mean if you don't discuss what measures you've taken then a hacker doesn't know where to start and what methods can be eliminated up front. It's more the case of "I don't know what I'll have to get through there, but I know exactly what to look for from that guy that told me everything he's doing to protect his system so it will be easier".

Lets through in another example...CNN is showing from time to time this program that is called something like The Biggest Terrorist Treats or something like that. On this program they are showing to the entire world which places in America are best targets for terrorist attack. Think about that and compare it to hackers.

I thought it might be handy for those recently asking about blank video when it came to using firewire ... but the rest is worth a look .

As for security ... if you never hand over the keys in the first place , it makes it harder only ... if they want in , they'll get in ... when it comes to pcs ... they cant if its not connected or turned on in the first place .

Yes , fLYtRap , I saw that to ... but do you believe them ... or are they hiding the real targets ... its the later ... there are better , more fearfull targets to be had that were not mentioned ... and I'll never tell .

It aint a cold or a flu thats coming ...

I believe you are referring to crackers. There is a difference.

I don't mean to overly tease you, but I have a difficult time taking you seriously when you originally did not take any steps to protect yourself and then try to play yourself off as a security expert. :P
Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

    Update:

I got used to it...people that do not really know me they think of me as I'd be 2 different persons

Very good info ... actually helped me solve a problem ... under the topic

When Win XP doesn't start ... answer was ... corrupted registry

    From the webpage ...

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

Again, if you are treating your issue as if it is a corrupt system registry, ignore the symptoms.

Symptoms: When you try to start or restart your Windows XP-based computer, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM <<< [I got that message on my wife's PC]
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

    System error: Lsass.exe

Providing the forum software is up to date it is as secure as can be expected. The current version of phppbb2 hasn't had a update in quite some time... this is good thing. The forum software isn't the only thing that can be vulnerable though, server software, mods etc. You need to keep it all up to date just like you do any software. Spammers are another story because most of them are bots, they are stupid and that's their weakness. Baldrick said he was going to implement a question mod shortly which will all but stop them in their tracks except the human spammers which are easily spotted and rare.

Besides this forum has stayed relative;y free of spammers since I've been around.

fLYtRap, why is it that every post on this forum concerning security you always pop up (no pun intended) If you're so scared then don't use the internet.

    I agree.

The membership at large has been pretty vigilant and quickly report spammers.

The private "Report this Post" option makes this a very easy thing to do without the need to get into thread discussions, accusations and arguments with suspected spammers.

I'm sure this has helped to keep things under control and probably saved some bad feelings in the cases of false alarm.

    No, that's "security through stupidity".

Security through obscurity is security that is ineffective if the method is known. If you believe no one else will ever discover your methods, it will work.

Read some Bruce Schneier if you are interested in the subject.

This is the method that Apple follows. Recently a virus writer for Macs, received death threats.

It's also because Mac users just aren't like normal people when it comes to their computers

I leave them unlocked because I live in a nice neighborhood and I know and trust my neighbors.
I never leave my door wide open...all my A/C will escape...that would be just plain stupid.
