I just purchased a new Philips DVP642, manufactured 4/07. I am unable to readout the version by opening the tray and entering 5 6 9 OK. Each button press just displays the inhibit hand and does nothing. Has the code changed or am I doing something wrong?

  2. Probably. Did you look at the back of your machine? I should have a printed label. It might have that info.

The new version of the 642 uses different hardware and firmware. There is a thread here somewhere which lists the various known issues of the "new" 642 (one of them being the firmware can no longer be flashed). If you just got the player, I would consider returning it and getting one of the newer models...such as the 5960.

I would strongly second this as an owner of a first generation DVP-642. There really is no reason to get one of these models now that Philips has better models like the 5960 available for not much more than the 642.
