  1. Ok, I had a PC that was working fine with all the right codecs on it from years of dutiful service

That machine goes away, new machine gets built. Old hard drives get installed into new PC.

New PC with new install of OS doesn't have any codecs. Install the basics...Xvid, Divx, Media Player Classic, but many videos still wont play.

FOOLISHLY install K-Lite or one of the other Codec Packs. Videos Play....but something has gone horribly wrong :P

SOME of my .AVI files are now being shown as MPEG1 in GSpot.

    But here is the kicker:
Any of those avi files that show up as mpeg1/2 have now been replaced with.....Thundercats.

Yep, I go to play my videos and I get...the middle of a Thundercats episode. Now, at one time a long time ago on this same hard drive I had ripped some thundercats DVD's, but then eventually deleted em (HTPC). But they haven't been on the HD in awhile.

This same MADDENING THING happened to me in the past, a long time ago, only then it was scenes from the movie BLADE II.

I think it happened when one of the CODEC packs tried to install one of those free MPEG2 decoders or something, and now all hell has broken loose.

Has anyone experienced this kind of madness before? And is it possible to correct for it? I've tried removing and uninstalling and so forth.....GSPOT shows 123 codecs installed. XVID, DIVX, and I installeD FDDSHOW trying to play some AVI files that gspot can't read to tell me what they are (all of these files played find on the old installation).

    Anyone?

While not ruling out a codec pack mis-hap, it sounds more like the file system is screwy. I would start with VLC, which uses it's own decoders to play video where ever possible. if the videos play fine, then codecs are you problem, and a clean out is required. Filmerit, while odd to look at, can help you clean up.

If the videos are still odd, run a scandisk and repair whatever it finds, then defrag. Then test again.

  3. Yeah looks like something very bad happened, alot of videos wont come up in VideoLan either.

Like I said, several years ago something similar happened, and it happened after I installed a codec pack with default options. Back then it might have been the Nero pack. Either way, my bad for rushing in

I'm just curious if anyone ever had that happen before, where all of a sudden a video that you know is an AVI suddenly starts playing a clip from some movie that you may have on the HD in another location (or that has been deleted), while other videos may simply show up as broken.

PS: Scandisk didn't give me any errors :P

Also, if you have a sec, didn't Mediaplayer Classic used to give you an option to move different decoders up and down in its priority list? ie: if a video wouldn't play you'd move the DirectShow filter up towards the top of the list, or am I thinking of an older version of Windows Media Player...??

    Thanks.
