    Hello,

I apologize if this might have already been discussed but I'm having a bit of a problem. I need to add my own subtitles to a DVD that doesn't already have subtitles. If this is possible, please kindly link me to the correct page. Thank You.

    Kind regards, Josh

https://forum.videohelp.com/topic267417.html This is one of the 'Stickies' at the top of this forum.

If you are going to create your own subs, you are in for a lot of work.

I don't have .sub or .srt files from my DVD so I cannot use those guides. What do I need in order to make my own subtitles?

Here's one post about a similar problem: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic330802.html

If you go back through the older posts in this forum, you may find a few more. I recall one or two in the last couple of months where they were discussing writing their own subs.

You can also edit your topic title to 'DVD has no Subtitles. How do I write my own?' and you may get better responses.

    Slowly.

First rip the DVD to your HDD.
Join all VOBs of your main movie to one VOB using VOBMerge.
Rename the resulting VOB to mpg.
Instal Visualsubsync. Read how to use it and load your mpg to start creating subtitles.
It's rather simple, but time consuming.

Note: There is a small bug in VOBMerge, though, if you try to save the resulting merged VOB to other HDD. Just use a directory on the same HDD (if you have multiple HDDs, of course).

There are several sites that specialise in creating and sharing subtitles that might be of interest.

    http://www.opensubtitles.org/ is the biggest.

as you're in Croatia, also try http://www.divx-titlovi.com/

  7. Hehe, Jeremiah58 is in Croatia, but the OP, TRUSTpunk, says he's in the US. But to emphasize, if this is a well known movie, you'll most likely be able to find subs at a subtitles site. Doing so will save you a ton of work. If this is some lesser known video, and you have to create them from scratch, you have your work cut out for you. I prefer to use SubStation Alpha for the job.

I also make an 8-bit Mono WAV file of the audio, open it in SSA, and get the timings off of that.

    Woops.

Anyway, if you have to roll your own, there is an active community that makes fansubs for Japanese animation.

See animesuki. They have guides like:

Depends on how you're authoring the DVD.

    What are you using?

In general, authoring apps have a file import dialogue, where you select the video and audio files. If they support subtitles, there should be a place to select the subtitle file around here.

Most support SRT subtitles, if not these can be converted easily to any other format.

    Nevermind,

At the end of the day, everyone's happy.

I just used DVDAuthor to join the VOB + SRT file. After I joined the files, DVDAuthor created an
ISO file. I loaded the ISO file in FairUse Wizard and I was able to encode the video with subtitles.

I appreciate all the help you guys provided. Mission accomplished!
