It is surprising that you even got a reply from KK above for such a basic question.

In this forum it is expected that you have struggled through some process and gained some basic info and experience and THEN post your question specific to a particular problem.

I also advice you to go through numerous excellent guides posted on this forum by experienced users for AVI to DVD conversion and then when you get stuck everyone will be more than happy to help you.

I'm sorry being not clear at first.
I capture all AVI file from my DV camcoder via Adobe software, edited and burn alot home DVDs. I worry in the future that my camcoder will not function and all my DV tapes have no use at all, therfore, I would like back up all my DV (AVI) files into DVD disk( currently I save those AVI files to external hard drive, but as you may know an hour (AVI) video take up about 13 GB space in the hard drive, if I burn them into DVD media and would be much cheaper than keep buying external hard drive.

You will need to split them into 4.37GB chunks to fit on a DVD, then you just burn them as data to a single layer DVD-5 disc. I will take about 3 DVDs per hour of DV.

I'm not sure what burning software you have, but any of them should be able to do this. I use Nero most times, but the freeware ImgBurn will work also, using 'Build' mode.

Or you could try winzipping them first to make them smaller.. then come back here and ask about tape drives bluray burners and other hi-vol media.

You have made clear that you dont want to convert your AVIs. But still I feel that splitting and storing your AVIs is not a good thing. Anyway its your decision.

However, you could encode a single AVI to fit into a single DVD. This way you'll have less number of DVDs to worry about.

The only compression you should use is from a codec (video / audio compession) , not from using an archival tool such as winzip , winrar , winace , or any other , as this dose not make them smaller .

Winrar dose support error protection , but the files will grow much larger .

Split the files into 430mb chunks , 10 to a dvd , perfect ... do not make 4.3gig files ... bad idea (or make 2 dvd copies , one as backup) .

You dont burn a dvd for avi storage , you stick a blank dvd in , and burn a data dvd instead .
