    Hi Gurus,

Did lot of reading, spend lot of $s on different cables but still not able to get results. So here it goes:

My laptop supports resolution of 1600x1200 where as lcd tv supports 1080p. My laptop have DVI (Not DVID) and VGA ports. My tv have HDMI, VGA inputs. Laptop graphics card is ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2.

First I connected using S-Video cable. I got full laptop screen on my tv but resolution is horrible. Due to max resolution supported by S-Video is 1078x768 I guess.

Second I tried connecting using DVI output from my laptop to HDMI input on my tv using DVI to HDMI cable. I got error message on tv "Unsupported signals. Please check your computer output".

Lastly, after more reading I came to know that VGA should be the best option to get max resolution the tv. So I used VGA cable from laptop to VGA input of tv. On my laptop I set 1600x1200 as max resolution on secondary monitor (tv) but when I see blue screen on tv, there are two black strips on both sides of screen. I can use only say 80% of my tv screen. Is there a way so that I can remove these two black strips from sides so that I can utilize 100% of my tv screen without sacrifying resolution. One more thing, how to get full resolution of tv (i.e. 1080p) through my laptop ? How to get audio from tv while connecting using VGA port ?

I spent around one month to come to this point. I really appreciate your help in resolving these issues.

    Thanks a bunch.

  4. Not to advanced you need to read the TV set manual. It will tell you the TV sets supported resolutions and refresh rates.

Then once those are set look in the manual for adjustments.
My HDTV has seperate settings for every input with extra ones for the VGA input that are involved with Centering and such.

    Example I have a 32" 1080i capable Tv.
It has a maximum resolution from VGA of 1366 by 768 since that is the panels native resolution. Anything else is converted in the set to fit that resolution excluding the VGA input.

Since you gave no make/model for your TV more help is not possible at this time. However if it is a 32" you can be pretty sure it also a 1366 by 768 panel inside.

The problem you are describing sounds exactly like your resolution is set wrong. 1600 by 1200 when divided by 400 becomes 4:3 aspect ratio not 16:9 so I would not expect it to fill the screens side to side.

    Thanks TBoneit.

Mv tv is SONY KDL-46XBR3. TV manual says 1920x1080 res supported with HD signals. For VGA, SXGA supported with VESA 1280x1024. I can set display card to output 1920x1080 but how to transfer it to tv without HDMI port ?

    Cheers.
