Magnavox combo DVD/VCR/TV

I'm having issues with the closed caption and or subtitles playing on some dvd's.

The disc menu shows it is available, but it won't work for nothing. I have run into this issue with two series from television.

Any suggestions?

Assuming you are referring to commercial discs, then it sounds like a DVD player issue. Assuming the discs actually have subtitles and/or closed caption AND the DVD player supports closed caption, all you should need to do is activate that function. You can do that via the DVD player setup menu, which usually just changes the default on or off. You can also set the option in the DVD setup menu and you should be able to turn them on/off using the remote.
