Hi, I'm looking for a program (freeware or not) that is simple and easy to use to make little video compilations (mixture of video block and music, etc...). I want to work principaly with avi/mpg files and have the final video in the same format.

Anyone have a great program to suggest ???

    Thks a lot in advance

AVI is too general, what type os AVI's?

For MPEG there's a variety tools, Ulead Video Sudio and Womble probably top the list for editng because both will edit without reencoding which maintains quality. they only reencode the parts you have edited.

As far as AVI's if you are referring to Divx then Ulead is proably not a good choice, it supports the codec but I've seen it mentioned it will sometimes choke on Divx. You could download the trial and give it try. Other AVI like uncompressed or DV-AVI is not a problem.

Your final format will have to be AVI or MPEG, not a mix, unless you only plan to view it on a computer. And for AVI type formats, you would need to use Divx or sometimes Xvid to play on a Divx compatible DVD Player. And you would have to make sure the video is in line with the Divx players required format. Or go with MPEG, which should play on most any DVD player, if the video is DVD compliant.

I'm not clear with what you mean by 'video block'? Still and motion videos or just video and music tracks?

DVD compliant Video tracks are usually put together when authoring. So if you are using MPEG videos, you would need a good authoring program. Maybe GUI for dvdauthor for freeware. For payware, maybe DVD Lab Pro.

thecoalman : thks i'll take a look over these program, by avi, i meant xvid or divx. I heard of MAGIX.Movie.Edit.Pro too, is it likely the same as the 2 you are saying? do you know this one and is it a better one no matter if its a payware ? thks

redwudz: yeah one format or the other and its mainly to use and watch on a computer.

by video block i meant sequences of videos files (avi or mpg) from different source (Sorry my primary language is french so sometimes i might use improper expression in english ). So i want to cut and join some videos sequences in one video file and add music (deleting or not the original sound), add pause with writing , etc... an example i could give of what i want to do could be a video compilation of top 10 hockey goals, something like that.

Thks a lot again for the help
