I've been using K-Lite codec std pack for the last few yrs with maybe 2 or 3 restarts per month, however lately it's almost an daily affair and I'm 100% sure it's due to the newer K-Lite/MPC.
From Google, I found zero codec pack http://impulse7.com/zero/ and now I've:
1)ffdshow 1349 by XXL
2)AC3 filter 1.45b
3)MPC HomeCinema V1.8.8.0 http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=170561
4)Real Alternative Lite 1.52
No restarts/errors from MPC for the past two days and I COULD play all my video files INCLUDING 99% of .mov files except these two .mov files:
1)no sound and no picture

I know if I'm to install QT Alternative(or the new QT Lite), I could play these two files using MPC, however I'm NO fan of anything from Apple and also since I can currently play 99% of .mov files just using the defaults ffdshow without installing QT Alternative(or the new QT Lite)...can any video/codec guru out here help me, maybe something I need to adjust/enable in ffshow/AC3 filter or?
Thanks in advance.

I noticed this on the 'zero' page as a reason to use their pack instead:
another codec pack destroyed your system? That's too often the result of installing a indiscriminate codec pack like K-lite.
Quicktime Alternative is definitely not from Apple.I think they are not happy that others have used their codecs. I would just install it. Even with QTA installed there's is no guarantee you can play those files. They may have other problems.

Thanks redwudz for the feedback.
I could play the above two .mov files after installing QT ALT/QT Lite (I already tested!)
What'sme is how come only these two .mov files? as the rest of my .mov could be played without the need of QT ALT/QT Lite
P/s QT ALT is dead after 1.81 (QuickTime components version 7.1.6.200) and the replacement is QT Lite 1.1.0 (QuickTime components version 7.2.0.240). -
Sorry, I know very little about Quicktime and the .mov format.
I suspect there are many variations to the format, much like MPEG-4. Someone that knows more about them might be able to give a better answer.

Thanks again redwudz and jagabo.
Well MediaInfo is excellent (at least for me), as it provides straight forward answers! (I could never figure out how to use GSpot, as it always provides too much/too little or "???/maybe" whenever I tried to check file info).
OK, for my two .mov files (from MediaInfo):
1)WMV3/ADPCM
2)Sorenson3/MPEG-1/2 L3
so, how can I play these two files using ffdshow? or do I need MORE codecs?
Thanks again.
p/s I already tried enabling all to "Libavcodec" under codecs (ffdshow), but still no go
