I have a 700mb movie that was split into 49 parts, all the same name with ending: xvid.001 - xvid.049. None of the parts would play. There was also a .sfv file. I read various information and managed to join them using hjsplit. This created a single 690mb file of unknown type. I then checked this in gspot and it is an xvid.rar.
I can open it in VLC but before opening there is a warning that the '.avi ' is broken. It plays for two minutes (excellent quality) and then closes.
I'm confused. I checked that the 49 files were good in Quicksfv. I don't get why it joins fine but only the first segment (xvid.001) appears to play. Any ideas what I can do to either rejoin, convert, repair and/or eventually play this movie?

    All help appreciated.
    Thank you.

It's a compressed archive, split into parts.
Open the first part with winrar and extract your video file.

  3. Do yourself a favor: turn off Windows' "Hide extensions of known file types" option. From Explorer select Tools -> Folder Options -> View. The option is in the Advanced Settings section.

Thank you so much! I feel a little embarrassed . I always use winrar by right-clicking on the chosen file, and since the option to extract was not there I went through all this hoopla (see above) thinking it was an unfamiliar file type.
On your advice I actually opened Winrar itself and was able to extract the .001 file from there. Et voila! a complete movie.
    Thank you again!

Jagabo - thanks for that. Will do. What a pest - and I'm newish to PCs (mac lover) so all this fiddling about is a conundrum to me.

mutter, to add, when you enable the extensions to show as jagabo directed, you should see names and extensions like video.ro1, video.ro2... or similar and so on. If any are missing the file will likely be corrupt, but WinRAR will tell you this. WinRAR will automatically combine all the parts together. For freeware RAR extraction, you can also try 7-zip: http://www.7-zip.org/

    And welcome to our forums.
