Sorry, I think I might of posted this on the wrong forum. I apologize.

Hello everyone. Newb in the house.

this forum is pretty cool. I just started doing some converting files to dvds.
    I am using convertxtodvd

    well, here is my problem.

I downloaded Samurai 7 (DVD ripped)

The subtitles are embedded in the files.
THey play perfect on my PC.

So when I finished converting and burning to dvd, and I try to play on my tv. the subtitles dont show. the quality is great but no subtitles.

I think I read something about overscanning, but still havn't grasp it.

    Thanks for all your help.

Oh yea, when I choose the Preview option on convertxtodvd screen, I see no subtitles. compare to dvdshrink when its encoding you can see the subtitles while previewing it.

    hopefully that makes sense.

    thanks.

Do they show when you play the DVD on your computer? Overscan is just a TV phenomena. The whole screen should show on a computer monitor.

    And welcome to our forums.

Use the Subtitle button on your remote to turn them on. There is a check box in the settings for ConvertXtoDVD to make subs on by default (I think - could be wrong) but your subtitle button should trun them of if they are there.

I checked and the subtiltles default button is automatically turned on. I tried on the TV but no results.

The files are mkv. I dont know if that has anything to do with it. Plus, I was working on microsoft word while the converting process (does this affect the process?).

    thanks

Word should have no effect. I don't believe ConvertXtoDVD will take subtitles from within an MKV contanier - you would have to give it external subs - .srt format is the most universally accepted.

okay, so this is what I am trying at this very moment.

I used dvdshrink to encode and then use convertxtodvd to convert and burn.

I can see the subtitles in the preview box( convertxtodvd ). so I hope this works. I'll post results in a hour.

U will need to extract the subs before converting using MKVExtract. Then just rename the subs to the same name as the movie if u want CXTDVD to pick them up auto or u can select the subs manually thru the list.

So when I am extracting MKVExtract I get the following message:

"mkvextract.exe and/or mkvmerge.exe file not found in the same MKVextractgui folder. copy them into this folder and try again."

But MKVextract still opens after that dialog box. So in the MKVextractGUI main i try to drag the files and i get the following error:

    "Error creatin Chilg Process

    CreateChildProcess (ExeName, commadLine, FChildStdoutwr)"

    Hopefully that makes sense.

Oh yea, my dvdshrink to convertoxdvd worked, but when i played it on my tv, the subs were cut off. Should I resize to Full screen 4:9 ratio.

    thanks

MKVExtractGUI requires that mkvtoolnix be installed to the same folder (the folder in which MKVExtractGUI is installed).

gtorres001: What did you download in regard to mkvtoolnix? It should be an installer file that contains the files MKVExtractGUI is looking for. If you're following the Download link from VideoHelp's mkvtoolnix page, look for the Windows installers at the bottom of the homepage (the version you're looking for should be the following: "Unicode enabled (Windows NT, 2000, XP or newer) installer v2.0.2-1"). Or just click on the Mirror link on VideoHelp's mkvtoolnix page, and it'll download the same installer.
Yes, it should solve those 'child window' problems as well.

Run the installer and tell it to install to the directory in which you have MKVExtractGUI installed.

I should note that the demuxing isn't necessarily a quick process, but it shouldn't take that long.

am i suppose to copy the files from cd to my hardrive.?
The videos you're attempting to demux? I don't think it's absolutely necessary, but it'd probably be a good idea.

  21. Hello, I'm also a new member. MKV's have been giving me a lot of trouble lately, despite all my research. I'm doing exactly as you say, and yet I'm still getting the Child Process error. Also, I have the same problem so I want to use the extractor over the merger, correct? The merger also seems to separate the files, but it isolates the subs as mks, which convertx can't read as a subtitle channel. Am I making this more complicated than it is?

  22. If you try with AVStoDVD (use latest beta), it will take care to extract the embedded subs from the MKV and then to create the DVD.

Let me know if you try

  23. I will, thank you should I let it download that Haali splitter? If I do, should I let it disable the internal and Gabest's mkv splitters, as well as check the box to associate mkv and mka with windows media player? The program doesn't seem to touch on mkvs at all. Thank you for trying to help, I appreciate it!

I tried to burn it but it can't process the subtitles. When I put in the file it asks for a file to extract the subs from so I put the same file in there and it lets me check the subs but then there is no okay button. All I can do is just exit that. I did so and let it burn but then it came up with several messages saying there was an error reading the subs. Any ideas to fix it?

Why not simply demux the original to extract the subs as separate IDX and SUB files or SRT whatever they are, then put them in the same folder with the video and ConvertXtoDVD should pick them up.

If the MKV file has subs contained then ConvertXtoDVD will pick them up. If the MKV doesn't have subs then open the MKV file in ConvertXtoDVD and where it says subtitles none right click on that entry and you will have an option to ADD a subtitle. Of course all of this is in the help file that these days no one seems to bother to read. Yes I'm grumpy because I've spent the afternoon showing people the bl***y obvious!!! Please remember the right mouse button it can do wonderous things sometimes
