Ok i just want to keep .avi files with odd sizes so when i play them on my DVD player it won't look so blocky.
I'm not so concernd about the size as long as it looks right, most of the avi files have odd sizes ex: 512 x 408, 496 x 400 etc

If someone can tell me not so much about the size (unless it will make a significant difference in the blocky output

In options i always check High Quality

What do the other check boxes do and will it help

Here is an example of the Movie info using QT

    Okay; here's what I did:

I dropped a "smaller than standard" video into ffmpegX, then selected "DVD mpeg2enc".

In the Video tab, I made the width and height equal to the original video (let's use 512 x 408 as in your example). Then I clicked on the Filters tab and set the letterbox to fill up the width and height in order to reach 640x480 (the standard for NTSC TV). In your example, I'd set the top and bottom to 36 each (36+36+408=480), and the left and right to 64 each (64+64+512=640 - which, when made into a DVD, becomes 720).

My "test" video was 640x352 so I set the video size to 720 x 352 and used 64 pixels for the top and bottom letterboxing (in the "Filters" tab).

The final video (as a DVD) plays well. I'd suggest trying a short clip and burning a DVD/RW (assuming your set-top box can play RW's).

Let us know how it goes.
