I just accidentally finalized a disc, that I was recording bunch of clips to and still 1/2 empty.
Can I continue to record clips to this disc and then finalize again, or is that it, it's over. thanks.

What does this word mean to you ? finalize
If it's a -r or +r... your done....
If it's an RW, i'm not sure if you can add to it once it has been finalized. -
Dvd recorders can unfinalize discs ... but you need to check the manual for the unit as to what media type is supported for the function .
Pc's cant unfinalize discs ... once done , thats it . -
thanks guys, I'll check it. also curious, is there a way to cancel it once you clicked ok?

I would imagine you could an RW but not a write once disc. -
If it s a +R or -R [write once] and finalized, That’s it.. I know of no recorder that will UN-Finalize a such a disk
If a +RW it does not require to be finalized [I know of no recorder that will finalize it]
The +RW can be recorded to on the free space. The disk can be erased and reused.
If a -RW it would require to be finalized, to play on another unit but this can be erased and the disk reused, I do not know if information can be added to a finalized –RW disk but doub't it -
My pio DVR-220 and DVR-225 units lets you unfinalize -RW discs without erasing existing titles.
So if you accidentally finalize a -RW disc that is only 50% full, you can unfinalize it and add titles without erasing existing titles.
In contrast, my Sony GX7, Pan EH55 and LiteOn 5005 units will erase -RW disc if you unfinalize. You would lose the titles previously recorded on the finalized -RW disc.
Have not tried to unfinalize -rw disc recorded on my jvc drm100s unit. If you are interested, I can try unfinalizing a -rw disc on the jvc unit. -
Yeah it's -r, so I'm out of luck. But still curious, anyway to cancel a finalization once it's starts?
I'ts quite easy for this to happen, as you eject and the box comes up. -

Interesting post. It notes that units do operate differently
It would seem that once a –RW disk is finalized additional programs cannot be added until erased but that some machines will only erase an existing title while others clear the entire disk.
I doubt I would get a JVC but it would be interesting to know how it handles a –RW disk
I have two ilo RHD04 which will only burn + disks. My two Liteon 5045 will burn both + or – disks but I only have used the +RW disks.
All my units [8] are Liteon/ilo units and +/-R [once only] disks will play Un-finalized in all. they will not in another mfg unit.
I have found that there are a number of different units that will have nothing to do with a +RW disk and some will react badly while work ok on a +R disk. Some older units will not recognize a + disk at all.

Do not know the unit you have. My Liteon /ilo units, a + or – R disk, an eject will flash a note on finalizing the disk for play on other machines but do not finalize it. Doing so in tools gives the option to either Go or Exit
I can’t see a unit finalizing a disk on eject. It would seem that would defeat the disk use.
If by Box comes up, this is a prompt to either finalize or not You would have to be very careful. -
G: I'm using a new Sony
thanks Alan, I'll look in manual, good idea if I can get that message not to come up on eject, but when I want to finalize manaully. -
Dang can't find anything in manual ( Sony RDR-GX330) that says I can disable he forced finalization after ejecting. anyone know about this issue more?
-
That's weird...
There must be a way to turn it off, otherwise they are forcing you to waste all kinds of disc's if you want to record only say a half hour, take the disc out to finish adding to later, and use the unit for something else...
Have you googled the issue ? Google the make and model # along with "finalizing" and see if you get anything, call the manufacturer, check their website ?
There must be a way, have you went through all the on screen menu's for the setup & options ?
Look for something under finalizing options, turn off auto finalizing ?
Mine you have to go into the on screen menu, choose to finalize & then it still ask's you to confirm TWO time's before it finalizes to make sure you really want to.
But then again, i stay away from Sony products 8) -
The RDR-GX330 doesn't automatically finalize when you eject a disc, rather it asks you (except for DVD+RWs). The manual states on p36:
Press ^ OPEN/CLOSE.
The display shows the approximate time required for finalizing and asks for confirmation.
For DVD+RWs, the recorder automatically starts finalizing the disc.
To confirm finalizing, you have to select OK and press ENTER. To skip finalizing, just press the small, black RETURN button.
BTW, according to the manual, the only types of disc that can be unfinalized are DVD-RW(VR) and DVD-RW(Video).John Miller -

For DVD+RWs, the recorder automatically starts finalizing the disc -
It's definitely what the manual says (p35) though re-reading it makes it sound like the disc is effectively already finalized though no finalization process occurs (such as for the other variants). Here's what it says:
+RW: Discs are automatically finalized when removed from the recorder. However, you may need to finalize the disc for certain DVD equipment, or if the recording time is short. You can edit or record on the disc even after finalizing.
-RW(VR): Finalizing is unnecessary when playing a disc on VR format compatible equipment. Even if your other DVD equipment is VR format compatible, you may need to finalize the disc, especially if the recording time is short. You can edit or record on the disc even after finalizing.
-RW(Video): Finalizing is necessary when playing on any equipment other than this recorder. After finalizing, you cannot edit or record on the disc. If you want to record on it again, unfinalize (p37) or re-format the disc (p37). However, if you reformat the disc, all recorded contents will be erased.
-R(VR) Finalization is necessary. The disc can be played only on equipment that supports DVD-R in VR mode. After finalizing, you cannot edit or record on the disc using this recorder.
NOTE: On page 80, there *IS* way to disable automatic finalization, but only when using One Touch Dubbing from a DV camcorder.
VR vs Video format: On this recorder, using VR format offers some great features, like automatic scene detection from DV (a new chapter is created for each scene). Unfortunately, my main DVD player doesn't support itJohn Miller -
thanks Johhny for the thorough research. Yes, I "usually" with click cancel and everything is fine. But in this case, I got distracted by something, and clicked the left arrow to get "ok" button (which I am in habit of also doing quite a lot also), and bam -- I was finilizing a disc I did not want to be even asked about finalizing -- hence this post. (yes you are right, there seems to be no way to disable the forced eject/finalize dialogue box for general use.

Johnna Malaria --- [Wrote A Quote fron the Sony manual]
"+RW: Discs are automatically finalized when removed from the recorder. However, you may need to finalize the disc for certain DVD equipment, or if the recording time is short. You can edit or record on the disc even after finalizing. "

I don't know where Sony get's this info The wording is off the wall
I have 8 Liteon /ilo units. NON will [automaticly] finalize a +RW disk and If an attempt is made to finalize them the unit will refuse and flash on the screen [Change Disk]
I have not seen any machine. that burns a +/RW disk, finalize them -
Okay... so it does NOT autofinalize....
It does ask you to confirm
you just oopsed it 8) -
My comment was not to [Johnny Malaria]
It was to the quoted statement and wording [IN THE SONY MANUAL]
NO it does not autofinalize a +RW disk, It should not even want to conferm finalizing a +RW disk, as a +RW disk does not require to be finalized [Period]
