I just started converting all my families past video footage on VHS to digital.
I started using a friends high end svhs deck through a dvdo video processor into a sony dv cam onto dv tapes. I'm starting to pile these up. I then plan on capturing to pc via firewire. Question is although the dvdo is full frame time base correction and I can adjust brightness, contrast, hue ato some extent, I am wondering if I would get a better result using either of the above cards. Or what would the benefit be besides "real time" stuff, which I am not really sure what that does other than speed? I'm not so into the transitions they can do, I just plan on cutting and pasting, but I need to adjust the color a little better than I am able to do with the dvdo. Some of the old tapes have really bad red tint to them.
Anyone use either of these or any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  2. If you have access to one for free, it is certainly worth a try.

However, if you have to purchase, then IMO it would not be worth the expense. SFAIK those cards are quite expensive.

With DV as your input source, filtering for color correction can be done just as well, with more control, and more options, on the PC.

The only other advice I would have would be to cut NOTHING. Having done this with 50+ year old film, the things that were the most valuable were items that would have been edited out 50 years ago.
