I purchased a 'download to own' movie but can only play it on Windows Media Player.
Is there a piece of software that will allow me to convert this protected (don't know why it's protected because I've already paid for it) WMV file to AVI, so I can play it on my Archos ?

Have you tried this?
https://www.videohelp.com/tools/FairUse4WM
It doesn't convert the file but makes it corvertible with any convertor you use. -
Your file is protected because all the media companies think that all consumers (this includes you) are thieves and you will share your downloaded and paid for movie with friends who didn't buy it. Also, protecting it enables them to maybe charge you for a version in the future that will also play in Archos.
FairUse4WM is your only hope. If you have a valid WM license, it can remove the protection. If you don't have a valid license, there's nothing you can do.
