  1. Well, it must be something wrong with my PC or something.

    I have an Intel D945 Dual Processor @3.4GHz - 1GBRAM - >free HDD ~200GB,
video ASUS X1600PRO PCIe 256MB/128b and all the codecs installed (ACE).
    - My systme is updated to the latest (WinXP PRO SP2 - genuine)
I have some HDTV clips from my friend - but nothing will play them smootly. Video just freezes, or runs in slow motion and things like that.

    I have tried with:
    InterVideo WinDVD 8
    BSPlayer PRO
    WMP 11
    VLC

    What is wrong ?
    (user ?)
To cut, or not to cut ... who is the splitter ?

Your system should play MPeg2, divx-hd and wmv-hd but will struggle with h.264 and vc-1.

an upgraded video card will greatly improve this. for ati nothng less than x1900 nvidia has two option 86XX 88XX 86xx series is gonna be much cheaper but is what most HTPC users are using.. the 88XX is gonna b great for gaming and other stuff for a bit longer.

Full hardware based h.264/vc-1 decoding is still out of reach. They are balancing hardware assist with CPU horsepower and driver tweaks to get to full playback. I'm watching all this with interest but have my $ invested elseware until a full hardware playback is supported.

I'm also looking for hardware assist or full hardware h.264/vc-1 avc encoding.

Well, it should but it does not play the files correctly.
The video plays slow motion and the audio plays normal. So it is at least annoying.
I have seen that the files are @59.9fps.

Someone please can give me an explanation of what i'm doing wrong?
I just want to look at some videos, is that too much to ask from my PC

    59.94fps indicates 720p broadcast.

You aren't doing anything wrong. If you want these to work you need to participate in the beta testing.

Tell us more about the file you are trying to play. What is it?

even mpg will be choppy with that video card. I too am playing around in this area. you can try to close/stop all running applications that should help.. if you have access to another video card giv it a shot as a test. my money says taht it will play fine with a card close to the ones i posted. also make sure all the codecs are installed and working correctly.. using VLC will eliminate that issue. but still a good idea. that clip you are trying to play is a divx/xvid file anyway not mpg and those are up there in cpu/video requirements too. look for proper ac3 filter and divx filters codecs

EDIT: i just had a thought microsoft has a site for HD clips in both 720p and 1080p.

try a few of these. if they work then you might be able to narrow the problem more

  9. Try turning off Divx's deblocking (post processing) filter. With that turned off I was able to play the linked file in several players without any problems on a 2.8 GHz (hyperthreaded) P4 with an ATI X800 GTO AGP card.

You can also try alternate media players like VLC and KMPlayer.

Well , for what its worth , my dell lat d610 laptop with only 32mb ati , 256mb ram , was not quite able to keep up with that clip , or one I got in 720p from ms site .

The clip link , kept falling behind video ... kept playing audio , and just jumped to the point in the video .
720p wmv from ms , ran at 22.6fps average .

Not bad for something that runs at 1200mhz .

Tested via windows media player 9 , koolplaya , nero showtime .

    ----

You really do have something wrong in the setup ... first given ... get rid of that ace codec pack to start with ... then work up from that .

And dont upgrade the video card ... consider checking for an updated drivers package for it instead .

That did the trick - I have upgraded to the latest the DivX player too - and then i just started the configuration utility and stopped the post processing. (I write this cause there may be others experiencing the same problem)

    Thank You very much!
