  1. I'm attempting to install an external usb modem and for whatever reason XP gives me a "can't install this hardware" message when I attempt to install the drivers. The modem is recognized as a device in windows but nothing more. Anyone know what's going on? thnx

do you have the latest drivers for the modem? Also try another usb port on your computer if you have one thats unused.

Yeah if it's an older modem i'd look for the latest drivers on their site or google for some.
Or diff. usb port as yoda said.
What usb's do you have ? If you don't have your usb ports updated to 2.0 some things have problems running also.

I have a killer expensive scanner i bought while i was still using win98 & when i switched to XP pro i could no longer use it because the drivers would not work and the fricking company decided not to release updated drivers for it

Then i used it on one of my secondary PC's but then added larger drives and updated to XP pro on those so here it sits And i had to go shell out a couple of hundred $$ for a new scanner that suited my need's

  4. I was using it on a usb hub then switched it over to ones at the back of my computer and it's exactly the same.

I downloaded updated drivers but the drivers aren't recognized when I attempt to install them. I don't know what the hell is going on.

    If it's laptop, ignore this.

If a desktop, internal 56k modems are extremely cheap now, $5-10 (the first 28k I bought ten years ago cost over US$100). In fact I've got two or three lying in my junk box, you can often scavenge them from old PCs. Saves some desk real estate and another power supply.

With a little luck Windows will have a driver already for it, there are a small number of standard chipsets and the same drivers work for all with the same chips.
If not sites like http://www.modemsite.com/ can help --- for that matter, have a look there for help with your USB modem.
