When I try to convert a .mov file to DV I end up with an incomplete encoding process, citing "could not find codec parameters." I'm using all the preset settings. Any ideas? I'm hoping this is what I need to produce a VIDEO_TS (and AUDIO_TS folder). And is this conversion even necessary to make a DVD that will play on all players?

Not necessary, ffmpegX can convert straight to DVD in one encoding.
I wouldn't convert to DV, unless you would want to import the footage into iMovie, Final Cut Pro or iDVD, but those apps can convert (most) .mov files on import by themselves anyway.

Thanks. What preset would I choose for my target format to make a universally playable DVD?

And for some reason I keep getting "can't open file" error when trying to convert to other formats (i.e. avi). What's up?

Either DVD mpeg2enc or DVD ffmpeg.

Maybe a space or special character in the filename or path?
