  1. Hi,
I'd like to test a DVD-r burned disc for c1/2 errors. Using my plextor 712a and plextools pro, the c1 test only works for CD-rs not DVD-rs, nor will Nero CD-DVD speed work with my plex drive due to teh proprietary ptp...i also looked into ptpxl, but couldn'd figure out from the plex website how to upgrade or if xl even does this test. I also looked for another tool, with no luck...could someone maybe steer me in the right direction? thanks.

DVD discs don't have C1/C2 errors, they have PIE, PIF, POE and POF. PlexTools Pro+712A can be used to test for all of those error levels. Three items down from Q-Check C1/C2 is Q-Check PI/PO test in PTP.

  5. is there a guide or something that explains acceptable/non-acceptable ranges for PI and PO errors? or are they the same range values as c1/2?

If you don't already know this information, you won't get anything useful from testing media in this way. It is not something that can be done at home by novices, with any sense of accuracy in the results. It's for entertainment purposes only when performed outside of a lab of engineers.

Don't let media-testing fanboys lead you down that path. It's a waste of time.

How about you let him decide for himself whether or not it is useful to him after he reads more on it and tries it out?

1.It's best to use one drive for writing and another to test so you get consistant results. If you only use one drive for both then run three tests and average the results.
2.You will get different results depending on the scan speed you use(ie 4x,8x,etc) so you should read the CDFreaks forum to see what speed is recommended for your drive.
3.My rule for PI errors is:PIE max=200,PIF max=20.PO is outdated and shouldn't be used.
I have to agree with Lordsmurf that the results on a PC are not as accurate as on professional equipment in a lab but it gives you a rough idea of quality:

  9. Thanks. Didn't mean to start an argument. My main goal was to see if the new watersheild TYs were good quality media...I read somewhere that they produced higher errors like what the economy TYs produced, not as good as the premium TYs. I currently use TY02s for burning and I expected them to be top notch, but I never tested, cuz I never had issues with them. I was going to try do a comparison test with my tyo2s against some TY watershields (TYWS) and see for myself where the TYWS media stood in terms of quality and errors, etc. thanks for the help, tho.
