  1. I downloaded an AVI file (I do believe it's a divx file) and I want to use Toast 8.0 to author it to DVD. But when I try to pull the file into Toast using the Video tab, I get a message that says that the file format is not supported. Ditto trying to import it into iMovie or iDVD. So what's the best way to do this?

We need a bit more info.
Since Quicktime based apps cannot handle it,
more than likely it is a codec issue.

    Do you have Perian installed?
Do you have Divx 6.5 installed?

Try opening the file in VLC, and performing the Information
command to find out what it says about stream 0 and stream 1.

Once we find out what codec it needs, we can then transcode it
    to DVD.

FMP4 is an MPEG-4 flavor as encoded by ffmpeg or mencoder at one time. Try DivX and Perian components. If QuickTime won't read it, you may want to change the fourcc to DIVX and try again.

and since it is an avi, you should be able to use Divx Doctor II to do this. But installing Perian should make Quicktime handle it fine.

    1. Install Perian.
    2. open file in QT Pro.
Make sure it plays fine, audio is ok, video is ok.
    3. Launch Toast 8. Seelct the Video Tab. Select the DVD button.
    4. Drag and drop it into the Video Tab window.
    5. Insert blank disc
    6. burn.

if you have problems with #2:
2a. Download Divx Doctor II from versiontracker.com
    2b. Launch Divx Doctor II
2c. Drag and drop file onto DD II window, hit process (ok)
2d. once done, repeat step #2 using instead the "doctored" file.
    if ok, follow steps #3-#6.
