I have thousands of video files...from tv shows to movies to music videos, home videos and so on.

Is there a piece of software out there that can act sort of like a jukebox to manage all of this.

Some features I would like to see would be category selection...like the ones I mentioned above. If you click of a particular video I would like to see a box with a description of the content and another with an image display i.e. dvd cover art.

The ability to cue up videos like in a music jukebox or just play random videos from all selections or from particular categories or groups.

Perhaps the ability for dual monitor support so you can have a display running while you browse or select other videos.

    Thanks.
    Andy

Well, the sesamtv has some of the features it is not really anything that Windows Media Center is.

I would really like the ability to have info on the selected file displayed....like the title, description, cover art, etc....the display area in sesamtv isn't even big enough to show the whole filename.

    Thanks anyway...any other suggestions, anyone?

The problem with for software such as this, would be that there is not data base to provide all of the information that you want for each clip. iTunes on the other hand, can pull that info/data from a database.

And no, I've never seen any such software. About the best you'll get, is the file view if you store your files in My Music, My Videos, etc.

The information is not a problem. I do not even want the computer I would have running this to be on-line. I would input the info myself just like I tagged all of my music files including even lyrics.
I know video files don't have ID tags but the software could just have a database to input all the info to.
I think it is becoming obvious that the software I want does not exist

I think maybe the closest thing I might be able to get to it is to design a local website in HTML. You could then browse to any file on your pc on a page with all the info I mentioned (pictures, descriptions etc.) and have it launched with the appropriate program when you select it.

I would take a serious amount of time but it would be pretty cool when it was done. The only thing I can think of that would not work if I did it like this would be the ability to cue up multiple files.

You may want to search for "media library" type software. You may come across something that you can get to do what you want.

On the html idea, something like this http://www.filesland.com/companies/AMMTools/7631-screenshot.html may be helpful.

    Good Luck

    ok, listen up.

I am putting all my DVDs (400 odd) onto Xvid for i) backup and ii) play off computer using TV/projector and i want exactly what you want.

    try this: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/File-CD-DVD-Catalog/All-My-Movies.shtml

it is v. cool, you type in the name and it will search the online DB to populate all the data.

    actors, directors, everything!

so you can click on the name of the actor, and see all movies you have with them (i want to watch that movie with harrison ford...what's it called....)

it will automatically put in the dvd cover artwork as well
it also links to imdb website for the movie and actors / directors etc....

it is totally what i want, and after reading this post i thought nothing existed....

you do have to pay for it however, although under related downloads you may find a free version.
thanks to the last post for pointing out the right search term- as i had spent hours searching under "movie file organsier" and such...

generally i think that as we digitise all our media this kind of software (like you said, an itunes for movies) will become more popular, and the auto population of all data and artwork is just soooooo cool!

    hope that helps!

It seems that there are many programs to do what I was asking...some with capabilities far beyond what I was imagining.
Check out this AVS thread if interested.
