I have a VIDEO_TS file that playes w DVD player.
its not a copyright issue. it have several chapters. a few have sound and the rest don't seem to.
Id very much like to findout with some other program if the 'soundless'tracks had sound that can somehow be recovered with a conversion
any ideas?
much appreciated!
cheers

some further information:
I used yade X (french version unfortunately, and my french is Menu Restricted Food menu that is!)
I extrated two files: a tlp2-00.m2v this seems to be the video of one track
t1p2-00-en.ac3 this seems to be the audio. VLC player plays this.
so why does DVD player not play this audio?
is there a way to recombine the two above to get a QT file that plays 'in the usual fashion/"
much appreciated as these file are important!

There is a known problem playing back certain ac3 files on Intel macs.

and double-click the M2V file. If that doesn't do it, convert
the AC3 to AIFF -- I know that works.Al Bloom -
putting the two in one folder did not work. opening the .m2v in QT still had no sound. how can I tell if I have the AC52 Codec you mentioned?
how do I convert the .ac3 into AIFF?

An .m2v file is the pure video component of the movie, so it will contain no sound by design.
The ac3 file is the audio stream. You've already indicated that VLC plays it fine.
You can use many tools to convert audio from one format to another. Ffmpegx should happily do so. If VLC will play your audio fine, but you still have trouble, it may indeed be worthwhile converting into another format (AIFF is one possibility; MP2 is another).
After creating the new audio stream, remux with the .m2v file and re-author as DVD. Then try playing the resulting VIDEO_TS folder.
But a more basic question is, have you investigated why some chapters have sound, and others don't? Did you look at the Info (from QT or VLC, say) for those chapters to see what, if anything, is different about them? And did you look for other audio tracks? Sometimes, the audio is on, say, Track 1, and sometimes on others (for different languages, typically, but maybe the disc was carelessly authored, and the audio was randomly assigned to different tracks). -

again thanks for all these tips. Id forgotten about ffmepgX and have been playing with that.
I extracted the individual VOBs from YadeX
two palyed fine in QT. I can't find any difference in the QT info on those w sound and those w/o
I dropped a VOB into FFmpegx and created a Divix.avi. that QT file plays fine. I have to fiddle to get the size of the image correct but at least this does the job, although I ahve to do them one at a time.
no longer a DVD but a series of QT files which is OK w me.

I haven't done Blue-Ray or other HD either. Just got a great
honking 47" Sony for F-word day, and we have all of 10 HD
channels here in the far boonies of southwestern Virginia.
And copying those HD's to my DVD recorder STILL gives me
nothing but a letterbox. Snarl.
But I digress. In Toast (7+) select DVD Video. Drag your QT's
into its window. Reorder as needed. Choose a menu style (I
always take "corporate" because I'm anal), hi-lite each to edit
the title and even pick a frame to show as the button's picture,
leave "chapters" at zero lest you get sub-buttons which bore
me to death. Burn.
AVIs might work as well as, or better than, QTs. Try it. Use
Toast's file/save to disk image so you don't blow all of $0.32
on a physical disc. And writing to your HD is faster than writing
to a disc. You can come back later to burn a disc.
If you double-click that image, it'll launch DVD Player (if your
prefs say so), and you can see real quick what you got.
Try it. You may well hate your first couple attempts, so going
the disc image route will make you feel better.
Go for it.Al Bloom -
Well How curious is this: two of the original VOB's had sound but were small 320 x 240
the ones w/o sound were processes in FF to make somethng like 890 x 400. With sound!
so I thought Id process the two w sound into larger files as above withthe same parameters
= No Sound!
I tried changing the track audio from 0 to 1 and then 2 and:
Nadaa no sound!
so I thought just use QT and export:
No sound!
how about that!MPro 2.66 3GB RAM 1.5TB HD's
