General Question, I'm needing to find out if its possible to see when an avi/mpg/mpeg was created, the orignal date it was put on to the computer, and or the day it was shot. I'm fully aware of the windows methods, but that just shows the dates, access, modeified, not the day it was shot, pls help as im needing this pretty quick its for an intern projec0\ot for school.

    Thanks

If the file is DV avi then it may well have the timecodes in it, so you can find out what the clock was set to on the camera when it was shot.

As for the other formats - it may be in the user data if the application chose to write it, which for most formats and applications will be nothing. Use something like G-Spot or avi2clipboard or mediainfo to see what information is available and/or provided for any given clip. But don't expect much of use.

guns1inger is correct on this , as dv avi may contain the metadata , if it was used , but this has no relation if the dv avi was created on a pc / mac , from source , and moved all over the place , from system to system , only from dv cameras input , metadata included , and stored without modification .

The only way is to include the data when its generated , just as the wmv fomat allows , and others ... vdub has some capabilities to include this info in avi .

Or to include whats known as an nfo (text file with nfo extension) , with the info and achive the nfo and clip together .

Files generated on a pc change over time in relation to times , last accessed , modified , ect ... however , if access to the pc that originally generated the file can be accessed , the exact date and time can be accessed using a tool like drive rescue (data recovery tool) .

So that would answer your question in relation to :

the orignal date it was put on to the computer
Thats most likely date only ... but may also include time as well ... have not used it in some time to recall .
