I'm looking for a comprehensive CPU speed comparison chart for both Intel and AMD CPU's. The way processors are rated and numbered now tends to obscure the relative speed difference. An organized benchmark comparison would be very useful in getting a relative comparison between processors. Does anyone know where this info might be available?

Thanks! They did a nice job on this site. They just aren't up to date with a number of the newer processors.

Eventually they will update it. The nice thing is that you can choose a given benchmark and pick a CPU based on what is your killer application.

I just found this site which gives an overall score rating for a quick glance comparison. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/

Note that that benchmark (or any other single number benchmark) may have no relationship to the software you run. You should look for benchmarks of the software you run -- specifically those programs where you wait for the computer (eg. video encoding), rather than those where the computer is waiting for you or I/O (eg. word processors, web browsers, etc).

The Pentium D 3.2GHz has Intel "virtualization technology" and the Pentium D 3.4GHz does not. The 3.4GHz was also cheaper than the 3.2. Don't ask me what Intel virtualization technology is; I don't have a clue.

As jagabo said, benchmarks vary by application. If you mostly encode MPeg2 or Divx, find the benchmarks for those apps.

Well, the Pentium D950 which is a 3.4Ghz do have VT.....

Unless they were benchmark the D945 against the D940 and loaded the D940 with faster RAM.

  12. Intel virtualization technology: Is used to run multi OS's of the same or different OS, with different hardware, memory allocation, etc.

I agree, too. Those numbers are gernally unrelated to what is probably the purpose of
the request. On this board, we are generally interested Video/Editing/processing and
Encoding. And, searching for reports for Speed; Performances; and Bencharking; data
related to this area would be an better choice, imho. I would think that this would be in
yours and other's, here, best interest.

Maybe not exactly related to the topic, but..

In fact, we have been working on this sort of thing right here. Its not perfect, but I
susupect that it can be useful. I also think that some apsects of the Methods and Tests
need to be updated, and also, its time now, for a general List or Report of the Data
    collected so far.

And last, since it would help to serve as a reference to this endeavor, I would like to
suggest we start a *new* topic for an "OFFICIAL" request for all the members (that
want to participate) to Run the Benchark steps on their setup and report back, the
results. Maybe a Part 2, or something, related to the link, below.
