    HI guys,

    Does anyone know how you can calibrate the DVD lense as i am having problems with it, it appers to be accepting DVD's but after a short while it frezees the picture and thats it, no going further. I have opened up the unit as its out of warrenty and i have noticed that there is a screw on the laser unit board, BUT i dont want to mess about moving it without expert knowedge.

    I think you will find it's a lot more complicated than just turning a screw.

    The most likely mechanical cause is that the mechanism is worn out or the DVD laser is dying. But you can at least try cleaning the lens and seeing if the slide for the laser mechanism isn't binding. Most all calibration is done by the electronics on the drive. The coarse calibration is initially set at the factory with custom tools and you will never be able to duplicate that at home. But if you have nothing to lose and a little time to spend, give it a try.

    One other point that may have not been mentioned in the other thread is that a DVD burning laser that has enough power to melt the aluminized layer in a DVD can also burn skin and the retinas of your eyes. Be very careful playing around with that mechanism.

    All these issues are likely to be unrelated to the laser. Let him trash his player to useless. Then see if the replacement also needs laser tuning. Fun to watch this play out.
