"Best" is a difficult spec to answer. There is more than one solution. One good solution is Fair Use Wizard. It's easy for the beginner and has a lot of flexibility to serve a more advanced user also.

i just want a high quality compression at a good file size, i would prefer if the options were technical like the pixels etc, AutoGK i found to work really well, is there anything better than that?

Since any DVD to Xvid converter would likely use exactly the same Xvid codec, the only difference would be in the settings and the initial method to get the DVD contents to the converter and codec.

The codec is what does the conversion, not the program that uses it. And the settings used with the codec generally determine the quality, etc. AutoGK should work as well as any of the others for the Xvid encoding part. I find FairUse Wizard maybe a little easier to use.

AutoGK, avi.net, GK, Fairuse Wizard, EasyXvid, StaxRip, Megui etc etc, plenty to choose from, its how you want the interface to look like is what you have to decide, picture quality they all look the same.
I love it when a plan comes together!

Unless you're good with AviSynth, then you'd better use tools that can read the scripts and process the AVI file.

  13. I don't use AutoGK but as I understand it there is an autocrop feature that attempts to remove any black borders but it sometimes makes mistakes. Try turning the feature off.

well i just found out you can access hidden options within AutoGK, but they shouldn't really make this hidden, i can now disable autocrop, you just press SHIFT+F9

  17. It's nice to include the resolution to the problem so it might help someone else in the future.
