It depends on what you want to spend. Oppo makes some players that many here think highly of, but they all cost quite a bit over $100, which is also more than many people want to spend. They are said to do a very good job of PAL to NTSC conversion, if you care about that. Their players are sold as multiregion players out of the box. You'll have to mail order to get them.

Philips makes cheaper DVD players that can very easily be put into multiregion mode. The models I've worked with have all been put into multiregion mode exactly as the "hack" said to do it. I don't know anything about your Samsung player or why the hack didn't work, but sometimes manufacturers make big firmware changes and what worked on one firmware won't work if the firmware change is big enough. I'm not aware of Philips doing this, but I would say your best advice is to decide what model you want first and then search on the internet to see how to put it in multiregion mode. Look for forums for this player, if there are any, and see if anyone reports not being able to put it in multiregion mode. Only then make a decision to buy.

  3. Actually it might help to visit your local chinatown electronic/video shops. If you're not looking into a name brand, most dvd players from china brands are all region players. I haven't had one that's not an all region player yet. They're also way cheaper than the big brands. The only negative is physicality:- they usually come with a less than attractive remote, and their menus don't look as nice as the big brands. The actual machine, however, doesn't look half bad. In fact, some are relatively nice looking, and compact too. Some of the brands are:- Shinsonic, Shinco, and something that sounds/resembles "bao bao gao". Weird names, I know. But they play pretty much anything - PAL, NTSC, crappy pirated discs, etc...

Or try and get a player from overseas. For example almost all dvd players from all brands (including the ones you mentioned) sold in Hong Kong are already 'hacked' in by the companies themselves and can play any region DVDs.

Don't forget that region codes are HALF of the battle.
You still will most likely run into a PAL/NTSC problem. Just because you hacked the player
to not recognize region codes does NOT guarantee you will be able to watch any disc you stick in there.....the odds are still against it actually.

  5. Philips 5960/37 or its replacement 5982/37 for $69.99 @ Best Buy. Plays Ultra Divx +R -R +R DL Divx/Xvid/mpg and so on.

    The Hack is simple:

    1. Turn on the unit
    2. Open the loading tray
    3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
    4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
    5. Enter 138931
    6. You will now see the current region code displayed
    7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
    8. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
    9. Press "OK" on the remote

Simpel worked for me on both models.
