I am using Sony Vegas 7 to edit some video however I've run into a problem. I ripped a DVD using CloneDVD. It saved it as a 1.2GB .AVI file. I attempted to use the file in Vegas but only the audio track appears. I tried importing it using the DVD Camcorder Disk option but it doesn't accept the file. So, I tried to convert it using various programs. They take several hours to convert and afterwards, I find out that half the audio is out of sync with the video or it's all choppy. So then I figured it was a codec problem. I used GSpot and it says that I have the proper codec installed (XVID). I tried using VirtualDub to re-encode it but it also won't accept it. I also tried Windows Movie Maker and it says I don't have the correct codec and then it won't even install it (even though GSpot said I already had it).

So, I would like instructions on how to edit the .AVI file using Vegas 7. All I want to do is break up the DVD into 4 parts and render each one as .WMV. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You could use AutoMKV or Tmpgenc Xpress and convert to WMV directly from the dvd.
Or use Vob2MPG and get a mpg from the dvd that you can try import in vegas or windows movie maker.

It sounds like it has been converted to Xvid or Divx, neither of which are very good for editing. If you want to edit in Vegas, convert to DV avi instead. After that, Vegas or WMM will happily take it.
