  1. Ok, I might be getting a European DV tape to transfer. Problem is, I don't have anything to play a PAL DV tape, and this might be the only time in my life that I'll ever need one.

So my question is, does it really matter what I get to play this back? I know some might say "digital is digital", but is there anything else I need to know? I'm usually one who is willing to pay extra money for top quality, but in this case I'd like to spend as little as possible.

I'm thinking about just buying a cheap used camcorder on eBay, use it to transfer the tape to my PC, and re-sell it. Assuming I find something in good working order, does it really matter what I get?

No, just make sure it really is PAL and that it plays OK - i.e. heads aren't knackered, though they may need a clean.

Alternatively, maybe hire one - it might work out cheaper and less hassle.

  3. What about different brands? Are there any issues with certain brands of tapes not working in certain cameras?

Also, do all DV cams have a FireWire out? Sometimes the descriptions for these things are pretty vague...

I believe the problem used to be that certain brands of cam "preferred" (for want of a better word) certain brands of tape because of the way the tape was lubricated. I further believe that this has now been overcome, but I'd suggest as new a model as possible and buy a new tape.

I believe so. I base this on the fact that I believe that the preferred method of DV cam-to-PC transfer is via firewire.
