You use a converter that has psp profiles like psp video9. You can then check what settings it uses and use in other converters.

You have to factor in the size of your memory stick and how large you want the converted file to be.
I upgraded my PSP Video 9 to version 2 and it supports 480x272. This is the native resolution of the psp and firmware 3.40 and up supports playback of this resolution off the memory stick.

I've been converting episodes of The Shield so I can watch them during my commute to and from work. So far I have tried 320x 240, 368x208 and 480x272. It goes without saying that 480x272 gives you the best results as far as visual quality. The Shield's native aspect ratio is standard tv or 4:3 but the PSP does a great job of displaying it when encoded at 480x272.

My settings are mpeg4 avc 480x272. I dropped the default video bitrate from 768 down to 576, kept the audio at 128kbps and increased the volume 500% (not as loud as you may think). The file size for approx 45 minutes of an episode is around 200-230 mb.

The end quality is good.. not stellar .. more a couple of reasons. First, the source files were already ran thru DVD Shrink. Then factor in that the Shield is shot with a grainy filter. But the end result is very watchable.

If you want to convert a movie then go with the avc 480x272 setting, keep the default 768kbps video rate, use the 2 pass setting and make sure the source file is a direct rip with no compression.
I havent tried any movies yet, but now I am curious.

Let us know how it goes.
