I have a .avi file that is 7.68GB. It is only a 38 minute movie. Does converting it to MPEG2 reduce the file size? How can I find a disk large enough to hold the file???

  2. Hi-
Does converting it to MPEG2 reduce the file size?
Yes, if you set the bitrate correctly.

Go buy a dual-layer DVD. The AVI probably won't play in your DVD player, though, if that's your goal. It'll have to be converted to DVD. Reencoding to MPEG-2 is only part of the process.

Whatever a good bitrate tells you to use. You can find a list of them here : https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/bitrate-calculators

I like VideoCalc, but the VideoHelp online calculator is very good.
    Read my blog here.

I suspect this is an uncompressed AVI. It may be simpler to "convert" it to an AVI with higher compression, especially if you want to view it on your PC.

    Eg, using AVIReComp
You should be able to get a good quality 38 minute AVI file in under 350 MB. Excellent quality about 700 MB or so. The quality is better than the same size MPEG2.

This is not DVD Authoring. Moving you to Newbie Conversion. And Please, steve7510, in the future, just ask the question in one forum. This is close enough to https://forum.videohelp.com/topic331467.html#1716478 to be considered a double post, which is in violation of our rules. Please read our rules before posting.
