I published a Windows MovieMaker file to my desktop and after 23 tries it finally saved he file in a .avi format. It is a 38 minute movie roughly 7+ GB in size

I am using CUCUSOFT Pro converter program to convert from .avi to MPEG2. The program gets to 26% complete and then I get the error message Avi2MpegMain has stopped working.

    Help

Try a different encoder. HCEnc is very good and is free, as is Quenc. You will need a basic avs script, as both need avisynth to frameserve to them, but FitCD can write this for you.

AVS is the extension for scripts used by avisynth. Avisynth is a text based frameserver that is very powerful once you get your head around the fact that it's basic frontend is notepad. You write scripts to tell it what to do with your video. You can find links to most of the useful tools in the tools section, or by clicking on their names in the posts here (the first reference is a hyperlink).

FitCD is a clever program that can create a basic avisynth script for you. Just load your video in, tell it you want to create a DVD, and save the script. You can then load this into your encoder instead of the avi file, and your encoder will see the video.

If this seems a little daunting, give DVD Flick a try. It is a simple but powerful conversion and authoring tool, and completely free.
