  1. I'm getting ready to capture some old VHS-C tapes and I need to order a VHS-C-->VHS adapter. They are available in Motorized and non-motorized versions.(A search on ebay shows both types.) I figured you all in the capture forum have run into this and could tell me which adapter is the best to use for the capturing I'm going to be doing.

If memory serves the only thing the adapters do is position the tape so the VHS heads can read it. The motor, or lack thereof, doesn't affect playback at all. All motor does is load the tape into position. I would guess the non-motorized models have some sort of lever to move the tape into position.

Whatever the motor is for sunds to me like someone is making something more difficult that it has to be, or in other words just something else to break. Go with the non-motorized version.

  4. Ok. I just wanted to check, because I didn't know if one possibly did a better job (better quality, etc..) than the other. That was the only thing I could think of, because I too didn't understand why they would make one mechanical.

I've used both. You don't have to get the motorized one, but I find it easier to work with. As soon as you close the lid to the VHS-C compartment, the motor swings the tape into action.
There is also the possibility of trying to apply to much pressure or speed to the shifter mechanism (in the manual version) to where it could break or misalign the tape. This (sh)(c)wouldn't happen in the motorized version.
But then again, you have to deal with batteries...

  6. Thanks for the tips. For as little a difference in price, I think I'll probably just get the motorized one.
