Does anyone know how to make Nero 6 stop truncating long file names in UDF format (data DVD)? UDF is supposed to support up to 255 characters in a file name yet Nero always cuts it off at around 126 or so for no apparent reason. Or is there another free burning program I could try that will make UDF data discs (most all use ISO/Joliet which is even worse with file names)?

  2. Did you try changing the UDF File System version? The length may be only half the stated 255 charactersif you're using Unicode. Also consider the total path length.

Tried shortening the file path and using UDF 1.2 and 1.5 and it still got cut off at the same point. I really didn't want to use any higher than 1.5 for compatibility reasons. If I use a rewriteable UDF packet-writing disc it lets me use longer file names which is the most puzzling thing.

Just tried UDF 2.01 - same results. I see no option for unicode or otherwise, only physical partition/virtual partition/sparable partition and I believe the later 2 options will make it uncompatable with many OS.

  5. I tried several different settings Nero Burning ROM v.6 and couldn't get more than 127 characters either.

Just a guess (I've got a much older version of Nero)--

Are you making a bridge disc? (aka UDF + ISO9660)

IF so, you should be able to right click the root disk icon in the compilation pane and choose WHICH filesystem (and their naming peculiarities) is displayed.
***NOTE: if a bridge disc, the ISO9660 filenames are the default***

Not a bridge disc - UDF only.

The only question that remains is why does Nero InCD (a random-access UDF format) allow file names much longer than 127 characters but the sequential write-once discs do not.

Nero sucks. It does this on UDF, ISO and others. It always chops letters for no reason.

This is one of many reasons I use RecordNow or ImgBurn for DVD burning (data or video).

OK, I tried burning with ImgBurn even tho it seems more suited for video discs, but anyway I got an error message for a file name being too long. I tried it again but checked the box under UDF that says "disable unicode support" and it appears to work that way. Now the new question is, by disabling unicode support does this make a data DVD less compatible with various OS or what does this exactly do? I assume it means that some special characters won't be displayed correctly such as accented letters (not good for me either).

Unicode has 2bytes/character, ANSI one. Accented characters (as in French) are in ANSI, so they should be okay. Unicode mainly enables non-Roman characters (Chinese, Russian, Arabic, etc).
